About the Author
Nicola Gardini lives in Oxford and Milan. Lost Words was awarded the Viareggio�Prize and the Zerilli-Marim�/City of Rome Prize. A Fellow of Keble College, Oxford,�Gardini teaches Italian literature.

Charming boy, nasty women, against stereotypes

The microcosm of a middle class Milan apartment house is riddled with petty, sharp tongued women who torment the pretty doorwoman. If you’ve long held a sentimental love of Italians, this novel will prick that bubble. The malodorousness of Mussolini fascism floats freely among many of the residents in the early 1970s.
But the 13-year-old narrator restores that fanciful affection. A boy brimming with possibilities and insight he sees the various females in his world in a clear-eyed way.
The boy becomes the mentee of the mysterious Miss Lynd who arrives at last. She renames him, inspires a love of learning, and directs his future but in a way that reflects her own worldview.
But no one helps his mother, the doorwoman who dreams and strives to change her circumstances.
Well along in the story Miss Lynd’s son arrives with an Olivetti. He continues his mother’s life work on a dictionary. A middle aged unmarried man he stirs the homophobia of the house’s occupants.
There are endearing and exasperating scenes in this small stifling world. A short review in the NYT intrigued my to buy this. I trundled through to see where it took the boy.

The Keys Are The Dictionary And The Typewriter

Let us simply say (for a very complex theme) that this is the story of a young boy who discovers the world through words. Nothing could be more seemingly simple or irrelevant than that. Yet whether the narrator talks about his parents' relationship with each other, the tenants of the building, his relationship with a mysterious older woman, her son, and a love of history, there is the underlying theme of words and dictionaries which reverberate with echoes of Calvino and Borges. All together a rewarding, cerebral story.
