Most of her correspondence with generals Butler, Sharpe, Meade, and Grant was destroyed, and her "occasional journal"?written "only to be burnt"?was stealthily buried and lamentably damaged. But in the pages that remain, her character and courage come shining through. The CIA could learn from her. Rebel Richmond held her in such contempt that relatives of former Union prisoners whom she helped had to pay to have a granite stone laid on her gravesite some years after her death in 1900. Most histories of the Civil War at least mention Elizabeth Van Lew. The spinster daughter of a respectable Richmond merchant family, she was firmly Unionist, devoutly antislavery, and an effective Union spy. This volume consists of the surviving portions of the diary she kept during the war and some of her postwar correspondence. Many of the diary passages are more reticent than historians might wish, but that is hardly surprising, considering that, found out, her activities could have sent her to the gallows; indeed, some of her assistants met precisely that fate. Enough of the diary remains to throw new light on Union intelligence operations and the role played by slaves--Van Lew's and others'--in maintaining the espionage network. interesting fragments of a Southern traitor's journal

The Southern culture's toleration for eccentricity seems the only plausible explanation for the survival of this character not only during the war, but until September of 1900. Though her neighbors with Confederate sympathies clearly despised her, and shunned her, they did not kill her or even drive her out of the community. So much of Lew's papers were destroyed at war's end, in order to eliminate incriminating evidence, that what remains is literally small fragments of her wartime journals. I suppose even that is worth putting in print, but it's definitely a reference for specialists. The editor's introduction contains this interesting comment (p 17):

"Another problem for Elizabeth and her mother was finding money to pay for their spy efforts. An ever increasing inflation was driving up the cost of everything and eventually they had to sell their cow. It brought $1,500 in Confederate money only about $75 in US currency." A footnote to this statement references a "Confederate Inflation Chart", Official publication No. 13, Richmond Civil War Centennial Commission.

What makes this aside on prices especially interesting now is the rough equivalence between the Confederate dollar in 1864 and the US dollar in 2012 at least for the purpose of buying beef on the hoof. How far the US dollar has fallen since the "value stabilizing" Fed was founded!

About the Author
SERGIO FRANCO is a professor of Electrical Engineering at San Francisco State University. He was born in Friuli, Italy,and earned his Ph.D from the university of Illinois at Urbana-champaign. Prior to becoming professor, Dr. Franco had extensive industrial experience and has worked and publised in such diverse areas as solid state phycsis,pattern reconition, electronic music, IC design,and medical, consumer and automotive electronics. Dr. Franco is also the author of the textbook Electric Circuit Fundamentals, Oxford University Press, 1995. In addition to teaching, Dr. Franco consults for industry.

Great resource

This is a great book, it contains most of what you need to know about operational amplifiers, starting from the basics to the inner workings of the device. May I say that probably what I find most appealing about this book are the "end of chapter" problems?, perhaps the best approach to end of chapter problems I've ever encountered in an electronics textbook, let me elaborate on that: Instead of just being mere academic circuits with no use, starting from chapter 1 you will find a great deal of useful real-life circuits, the author may ask you to derive the gain equation of the circuit or to prove circuit operation, or any other parameter, which in turn, help you understand how real life circuits work, or maybe even use the circuit you just solved in a real application. I guess that what im trying to say is that even if you will find basic drill excercises, you will also find problems which wont stay only on paper.

The book is somewhat pricey and the reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that on several occasions the author will just flash formulae at you with the tinniest ammount of information about where did all come from, I understand that the book would have been much thicker if every little nuance had to be written, but this forces you to constantly prove every equation, which is a good thing, however simple things that could be easily understood with a little more information become complicated and force you to spend several minutes trying to figure out how the author got to the formula. I make several notes at the bottom of the pages to save myself a lot of time if I ever have to go back and re-read a particular section.

That being said, the material is very well presented, and overall this is a must-have book for every EE interested on analog design.

Great Book, Great Example Problems

This book is great for the upper division undergraduate and the graduate student alike. The author writes clearly and prioritizes getting his point across above elegant writing which I appreciate in an engineering text. Too often in engineering textbooks authors prefer elegance over simplicity, which is fine, but not if it gets in the way of getting the point across.

The example problems are phenomenal. The author uses just enough examples, placed at exactly the right points in the text, that drive home the important concepts from each section. If you read through this book and work the example problems as you go along, you'll have no problem understanding the material. This book makes electronics simple.

Simply amazing.
I am interested in bioinstrumentation and sensing in general and have an EE background. Bought this book to review my analog theory.
At first I found it a little difficult, but the more I persisted the more I came to realize the clarity of the explanation, the consistency and care with which the book has been written.
To reap the full benefits one must do the problems and relate the observation made, to the theory in the book.
I think this is the absolute stepping stone to jump in depth into the field of real analog design. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

There are so many stories that are written in Oklahoma Ride and all of them bring joy to me every time I start to think of them. �I have many memories of my grandmother, grandfather,my dad who has since passed away from cancer, mom, wife, daughter, and many others that were so much a part of my life. I wanted to enrich the lives of others with life stories that might help them along on their own road of life and journey through this earth. �Since I worked at AAA for many years the�"Guideposts" part of my title was kind of a take away from all of the trip planning and maps that AAA does. It was just kind of a natural to include it in my title to help people relate to the book and the stories of life that I write about. I tried to make the stories funny but yet with a serious side as well. The emotions did come pouring out in this book and I hope that others will enjoy Oklahoma Ride for many years to come and that it helps them in some way in their own life.
You see it's not about how much money we make along the way- or what size house we have, the car we drive, the clothes we wear, the country clubs we belong to or how many degrees, or initials we have behind our name that really matter. �It's about leaving something behind like my grandmother did that goes on forever after you're gone from this earth. �For after all, we're just passing through. �It's about changing lives and hearts along the road we travel. �It's about making a difference in the lives of others. �Life is the sum total of moments and how we choose to use them is really up to us! In the end we all make up our minds to do exactly what we want to do with our time.�

About the Author
Tony Smith retired after a long time career as a project manager with AAA in Michigan. �He is the author of several other books, including memoirs, children's books, and a family cookbook. �Tony resides in the heartland of America in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where he lives with his adorable wife Denise of thirty-three years. �He is a man of character that highly values his faith in GOD, his family, and friends. �Tony has come to realize that life is short but full of unending joy when we strive to live it not from a selfish perspective, but to the benefit of others.

Oklahoma Ride: Guideposts For Life, includes some great instructions for planning a trip, a step-by-step guide for your next move, and countless tips to make your life more fulfilling and rewarding. With basic suggestions to smile more often, be more generous with your compliments, and be respectful to others, it shows us how much better our lives can be.

Growing up in the Midwest with all my relatives living on the same street, this book reminds me of a gentler, more peaceful time. Tony talks about his Grandma telling him, "Don't clog up your heart." With all the violence on TV, porn on the internet, and countless other ways we let "junk" into our lives, what is it doing to our spirit?

Maybe we should all take a moment to reflect on where we're headed and check that our goals are still in sight. Like Tony says, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

It's a book about growing in life ..

Tomy Smith wrote a great book of his life memories and he is here to spread his knowledge and life expertise.
Tomy takes us to an amazing adventure and sights in Oklahoma. We "travel" to great places (I liked Ringling) and wrap the stories with a great sense of humor. What is great in this book, that each one can connect to one (or even more) to Tomy's stories
The book covers a variety of topics that each of us encounters in daily life starting with work, parenting, family relationship and connection with God (Tawg). This book will really "open" your eyes and will let you think no "how your life is".

There are a lot of "how to improve your life" books, but what makes Tomy's book so good is the honesty and the real personal experience.

I tried this book of my cloud PC and nexus 4. Work Great !

Although these stories took place in Oklahoma and I was raised in Michigan, Oklahoma Ride brought back many of my childhood memories and shared many of the same values so important to my upbringing. Very enjoyable....good read!

Elizabeth coaches distributed software development teams to improve efficiency and effectiveness of their development practices. She has co-chaired the IBM Academy of Technology Conference on Agile Methods, teaches courses on Disciplined Agile Development, and co-leads the IBM Agile Community.

Steffan Surdek is a User Experience Lead and Agile Champion in IBM. He has worked in the software development industry for over fifteen years as a software developer, architect, project manager, and team leader. Steffan has managed and coordinated large-scale projects with teams distributed in as many as five countries--India, Egypt, Israel, China, and Canada. He coaches distributed agile teams, is a co-leader of the IBM Agile Community, and teaches Disciplined Agile Development workshops. Disappointing

If you have no Agile background, then this book covers some of the basics. If you are a actually after information on Agile in large Distributed and complex integrated environments (as claimed by the authors) then you will be very much disappointed. However, you will learn that you need to be aware that other countries are in fact in different time zones - this seems to be a key issue for IBM (the author) as the time zone issue is repeated ad nauseam throughout this book. In fact many of the key points (which are mostly around telephone conferencing issues to India) are repeated over and over.

It's how they really do it!

There are a lot of books about agile software development. There are a lot of books about scrum. Most of them are pretty general. Of course, they have examples and case studies. What I like about this book is that it is a real reflection of how things are done at IBM. Whether you like IBM or not, you have a chance to peek inside the big blue box and see how they make things tick. I really, really appreciate that chance, so I applaud the work of the authors, who have not only collaborated to write the book but also invited their colleagues at IBM to contribute. I was also impressed by their decision to donate all royalties to charity. Well done!

This a really basic book about Scrum and things you have to keep in mind when you handle several teams. Tips are obvious about the team location, time zones, and culture, but it really does not put any example or situation that support additional knowledge.

Seminal AI book

This is a seminal work in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Following an initial period of enthusiasm, the field encountered a period of frustration and disrepute. Minksy and Papert's 1969 book summed up this general feeling of frustration among researchers by demonstrating the representational limitations of Perceptrons (used in neural networks). Their arguments were very influential in the field and accepted by most without further analysis.
I found this book to be generally easy to read. Despite being written in 1969, it is still very timely.

In 1958, Cornell psychologist Frank Rosenblatt proposed the 'perceptron', one of the first neural networks to become widely known. A retina sensory layer projected to an association layer made up of threshold logic units which in turn connected to the third layer, the response layer. If two groups of patterns are linearly separable then the perceptron network works well in learning to classify them in separate classes. In this reference, Minsky and Papert show that assuming a diameter-limited sensory retina, a perceptron network could not always compute connectedness, ie, determining if a line figure is one connected line or two separate lines. Extrapolating the conclusions of this reference to other sorts of neural networks was a big setback to the field at the time of this reference. However, it was subsequently shown that having an additional 'hidden' layer in the neural network overcame many of the limitations. This reference figures so prominently in the field of neural networks, and is often referred to in modern works. But of even greater significance, the history of the perceptron demonstrates the complexity of analyzing neural networks. Before this reference, artificial neural networks were considered terrific, after this reference limited, and then in the 1980s terrific again. But at the time of this writing, it is realized that despite physiological plausibility, artificial neural networks do not scale well to large or complex problems that brains can easily handle, and artificial neural networks as we know them may actually be not so terrific.

Wonderful, enlightening

So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.

I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!

A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding

James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.

A little disappointing

Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.

The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.

I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.

It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.
