Equipping the Equippers

Bill Hull's "The Disciple-Making Pastor" is a classic in the field of local church ministry. I can't imagine a pastor being without it, or at least without the concepts and processes that Hull highlights.

My ministry mentor first introduced the book to me two decades ago. The Ephesians 4:11-16 principles that Hull emphasizes changed my mindset about the role of the pastor. Before reading "The Disciple-Making Pastor," I was trained in two Evangelical schools (a fine Bible College and an excellent Seminary), yet somehow I was never exposed to "the pastor as equipper." To this day, many Evangelical pastors assume that their role is to do the work of the ministry. Hull reminds us that Christ calls pastors to equip others to do the work of the ministry. Pastors, as Hull says, are player-coaches. They are skilled ministers, but more importantly, they are skilled makers of ministers.

Hull's model helps us to see that the issue really relates to whether a pastor wants to be Ed Sullivan or Milton Berle. Milton Berle reflects the pastor doing the ministry. Berle kept himself in the limelight, however, his show did not last nearly as long as Sullivan's. Ed Sullivan, on the other hand, kept putting other people in the spotlight, and his show lasted decades. More importantly, Sullivan launched the careers of many others--just as pastors ought to launch the ministry careers of their parishioners.

People tend to think that pastors who equip are lazy or uncaring--"You just don't want to be bothered with visiting people in the hospital!" The true motivation for the disciple-making pastor is just the opposite--the desire is to see every member a minister. The disciple-making pastors refuses to rob people of the joy of serving others. Such pastors take great joy in distributing shepherd staffs.

Hull is right; pastoral care is actually the care the entire church provides for one another. On the ship of the church, there are no passengers, only crew members.

Hull is not content to talk in theory only. He provides a time-tested, proven model of disciple-making. His concluding chapters and charts are indispensable in "putting feet" to his model.

Readers of "The Disciple-Making Pastor" will also want to read Hull's latest book, "Choose the Life." Here Hull continues the disciple-making premise of his earlier works, but with a greater emphasis on the relational component (the people, character development) and the spiritual focus (spiritual formation, spiritual direction). Blending these two books creates a healthy recipe for relational disciple-making.

Good Challenge to Be a Disciple-Maker

Hull has written what I believe to be an excellent text challenging the reader to reconsider the priority of making disciples in the church. His underlying premise is that Christians do not stop at just leading someone to Christ, but to make disciples of others who in turn become disciplers.

Among the points covered include:

1. Ways cultural influences resist the pastor's discipling-making efforts.

2. Estimated that only 7% of evangelicals are trained in evangelism and only 2% have led someone to Christ.

3. The importance of multiplying disciples.

4. Getting the flock to thinking that the kingdom of God is more than just staying inside the walls of the church.

5. Effective communicators know how to get others to understand what and why something needs to be passed on to others.

6. Description of "velcro" ministries that keep people plugged into the church until they are ready for deeper discipling.

7. What a trained disciple looks like in terms of character and ministry skills.

8. A 6-step method of classroom training and on the job training for developing disciples.

Recommended. Be challenged and encouraged to do your part to make church much more than just a time of entertainment!

Outstanding

Another outstand book by Hull. It is the author's thesis that the anemic state of the church is due to a lack of discipleship or as he would put it, "It is a crisis of product". The marching orders of the church are plain and simple: make disciples. The modern church is adept at making converts, but it makes precious few disciples, thus failing to fulfill the Great Commission. Hull gives us a six step program to facilitate that process: Them what, they them why (most churches stop right here), show the how, do it with them, let them do it, deploy them in the world.
In chapter four, "The Role of a Disciple Making Pastor" Hull provides a strong theological framework upon which his thesis is built. In it, he makes the biblical care for the role of the modern pastor. Coming from a Christian Church/church of Christ background that relegates the role of the pastor to a glorified chaplain, I appreciate his care for strong pastoral leadership. He also takes issue with Rutz (The Open Church) who denigrates the modern pastoral rule. Hull rightly observes that without strong pastoral leadership as the "trigger mechanism" for discipleship, renewal will not happen in the church. Hull's analogy of the pastor as coach is excellent. His criticism of ministry to felt need sis a perhaps a little to hard. Though the idea of meet felt needs is overused, the idea is still a good one- you reach people where they are. The last few chapters were redundant and could have been considerably shortened

Hart's 'The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History,' Mohammed is described as the most influential person in history. Hart asserted that Muhammad was "supremely successful" in both the religious and secular realms. He also opined that Muhammad's role in the development of Islam was far more influential than Jesus' collaboration in the development of Christianity. He attributes the development of Christianity to St. Paul, who played a pivotal role in its dissemination. Born in 570 in the Arabian city of Mecca, he was orphaned at an early age and brought up under the care of his uncle Abu Talib. He later worked mostly as a merchant, as well as a shepherd, and was first married by age 25. Discontented with life in Mecca, he retreated to a cave in the surrounding mountains for meditation and reflection. About the Author
Kenneth W. Merrell, PhD, until his death in 2011, was Professor of School Psychology and Director of the Oregon Resiliency Project at the University of Oregon. For 25 years, Dr. Merrell's influential teaching and research focused on social–emotional assessment and intervention for at-risk children and adolescents and social–emotional learning in schools. He published over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles; several books and nationally normed assessment instruments; and the Strong Kids programs, a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum. Dr. Merrell was a Fellow of the Division of School Psychology (Division 16) and the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (Division 53) of the American Psychological Association. He received the Senior Scientist Award from Division 16, the Division's highest honor for excellence in science.�Ruth A. Ervin, PhD, is Associate Professor of School Psychology and Special Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Her professional teaching and research interests lie within the domains of promoting systems-level change to address research-to-practice gaps in school settings; collaborative consultation with school personnel, parents, and other service providers for the prevention and treatment of emotional and/or behavioral disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder via a data-driven, solution-oriented problem-solving approach; and linking assessment to intervention to promote academic performance and socially significant outcomes for school-age children. Leaves much to be desired

While this is the most popular book for introductory school psychology courses, I found there wasn't much information offered that wasn't obvious to people who are even slightly knowledgeable about the job.

I'm a research psychologist who was interested in looking into school psychology and so picked up this book hoping to learn about what it takes to become a school psychologist and what working in the field would be like. I read the book cover-to-cover and found pretty much all of it to be completely obvious. I found more helpful information looking up the "school psychology" into Wikipedia. The book does a decent job outlining what it takes to become a school psychologist, but doesn't offer much in-depth information on what the job entails. Perhaps this is because the field is so large with so many varied occupations and this book is for as broad an audience as possible.

If you're interested in becoming a school psychologist, I suggest getting a book specifically on the exact job you're interested in, whether it's assessment, research, administration, etc. A book this broad is not helpful unless you have no idea about the field and, in that case, just do a bit a researching online for free.

Solid introduction to the field of school psychology!

I'm surprised that this textbook had generally negative reviews because I thought it was quite good. It covered all of the NASP core domains of school psychology (obviously at a relatively superficial level - since it is an introductory text), including assessment, prevention, intervention, consultation, and research. Although the book was a bit too idealistic at times, I feel like that I learned a good amount concerning the field (having had little prior knowledge).

The information in the textbook is pretty up-to-date, including concepts like RtI and EBP that have only gained popularity in the 21st century, for the most part. It was also interesting to read about the changing demographics of the field of school psychology, concerning the age, gender, race of school psychology practitioners and professors.

Obviously, this book would only really suit an introductory class because it is quite basic. I do agree with the previous reviewers that there were some areas that weren't addressed at all that are quite common in the field (e.g., bullying) and that you could learn a lot about the field simply by consulting online resources. But as an introductory text, I think that it serves its purpose, and it has made me excited about entering this changing field!

This guide shows how to extend Visual Basic (VB) with code that handles some advanced programming problems, including algorithms that you can use every day to write faster and more flexible VB applications. After an introductory discussion of profiling algorithms and some techniques to emulate pointers in VB, the author shows how to emulate a variety of data structures, such as linked lists, stacks and queues, and arrays, along with their implementations in VB.

Besides these basic container types, the author also proceeds farther afield into a demonstration of trees in VB, including balanced trees. (Though you won't need these data structures for most programs, it's interesting to see how they can be written in VB.)

More applicable to real-world problems are the sections on sorting, searching, and hashing in VB. (These algorithms can extend the range of the types of problems VB can solve.) This book closes with some network algorithms and some discussion of object-oriented techniques for VB, including some "patterns" or reusable designs for software. As a student of computer science, I had a fundamental principle drilled into my head time and time again -- languages come and go, but algorithms stand the test of time. A good algorithms reference doesn't need to focus on a particular language; however, those books tend to be crammed with computer-scientists' jargon, and provide less than an ideal starting point for the novice programmer. Rod Stevens' Ready-to-Run Visual Basic Algorithms, Second Edition is an attempt to bridge the gap, to help people who know the rudiments of programming in Visual Basic (VB) experiment with tried-and-tested algorithms and incorporate them into their own programs.

To make sense of this book, you must already be familiar with variables, conditional statements, loops, subroutines, and abstract data types. Even more advanced topics, such as class declarations and static variables, are introduced and used so quickly that a novice programmer will probably need an additional reference. In other words, Ready-to-Run Visual Basic Algorithms is a logical "next step" for someone who has completed an introduction to VB programming, but you should make sure that you've understood at least one other book about VB before attempting to read this one. Best book out there for menswear

I bought this book to help draft clothing patterns for myself, and I have to say, it is hands down the best book. Once you get through the sloper chapter developing your own sizes, making patterns from the design in this book take almost no time at all. Actually, this book is the most well explained patternmaking text book I own, and I own quite a few, because every step is clear and concise. The best part about this book is the step-by-step instructions so that you can follow so easily, and as a beginner/student this was so helpful to me so i don't get messed up. Most importantly, if you have ever tried to draft patterns from other textbooks you know they never seem to fit right, but this book's patterns have always fit me on the first try!

Great text for all levels.

Very well set out text book. The text is well written and illustrations are concise. Only comment would be that unless you knew what to look for in the fitting photos, you would be hard pushed to observe the errors on the garments. They're too subtle and need a bit more exaduration. I've been patternmaking for many years and even without drafting any of these blocks or slopers, I can tell that they will be more than adequate for a great staring point. Nice to see something of such quality addressing menswear pattern making. It's like we don't exist sometimes within the fashion industry!

Realistic & Engaging F/F Read Dealing With Heavy Issues

The realities of females in the military is vividly on display in this tale that immerses readers in intense emotions and unrelenting uncertainty and helplessness. It's not always a feel-good story but is a very important one that needs to be told and is done so commendably.

The female characters in this male-dominated world are strong-willed and realistically portrayed to make them easy to relate to and to see yourself in their positions. Surrounding these admirable women are a group of men bonded through the good old boy system. It increased the feelings of helplessness as it seemed there was no one to count on. Luckily there was one shining light that decided to be an officer and a gentleman among all the crude commentary and trash talking constantly heard to make the workplace such a hostile environment. To survive, females either became friends or tore each other down with words.

Both Reese and Kim tried to live up to an image that they thought would keep them safe and help them be a part of the club. Unfortunately, pretending to be someone else backfired for them in a very harsh way. Once they finally chose to be themselves are they able to succeed. Having a connection that's based on friendship also helps and in this story it nicely morphed into more. Their sensual scenes were subtly erotic and reinforced their deep connection through the freeing feelings these interludes brought out. The friends to lovers theme, which is a favorite of mine, was done beautifully here. There was almost a lyrical and dream-like quality to it in fact.

From start to finish this was an engaging read with realistic and well-documented issues that the author didn't sugarcoat. The characters were easy to relate to, made their feelings ours, and dealt with things in a believable way. My only criticism is in how quickly the story concluded. I wish the actual trial and people's reactions to it had been addressed more fully. This story on many levels had a HEA but the reality is that what befell these military women continues to happen and only in speaking out can the tide be turned. On that level this story succeeds even further and I commend Ms. Gallagher on her bringing this serious issue to the forefront in such dramatic fashion.

liked rooting for underdog

Once I got familiar with the military acronyms in the first chapter, the writing became engaging and I was quickly invested in the story.
Reputations and rape form the basis of this story. There is love and healing, which helps Kim find the strength to stand up to Stanton. The relationship development is more about the character of their convictions. We know more about Kim than Reece. But wanting more isn't necessarily a bad thing. I did find their conversations about how to survive as a lesbian in the military insightful if not frustrating to read as there is still so far to go.

The everyday realities of a military command structure and how sexual assault is usually treated seemed realistic.
It's more than a he said she said, but until she has Reece on her side, believing her, she appears weak, she's not. I'm doubtful that there aren't career ramifications from nailing a superior officer, but it is a work of fiction.

A solid read on a difficult subject.

1st time reading this author. Presents a pretty good story with a lot of heavy themes. Interesting reading about the military aspect of life from a woman's perspective. I liked watching the relationship between Kim and Reese develop.

terrifyingly solid opinions on world politics....

This book is such a revelation it has to be read COMPLETELY to be appreciated. I cannot stand critics who do not read the entire book, or watch an entire film! ...keep you opinions to yourself.

Although i agree with others critical overview that Col. Donn de Grand Pre's opinions on the zionist/bolshevism hidden agenda in world politics yesterday and today DO get a bit out of hand, and his pro Capitalism/Democracy view is a bit of a Catch 22 situation (a patriot is ALWAYS hypocritical), i admire and am enthusiastic in my praise of his depth and detail of research into history and current affairs. This is a must read no matter your political/religious standing... as is David Ray Griffin. do yourself a favor and READ them all!

There are many eye openers in 'de Grand Pre's' work - even for a critic - the revelations of the ancestry of past US presidents and hidden religions of world leaders, especially Euro Israelis, is incredulous - the insider trading in the UN/US/Rest of World political structure is like an octopus of complex deceit - it is beyond corrupt! The Bankers structured Nazi reign and the Allies zionist agenda is illuminating - worth more personal research to those who debunk it... six million casualties in death camps does seem excessive (how can we ever know a total number - exact records don't exist... do they)? ... the Euro Israeli/Bolshevik re-invasion of Canaan and expansion in the middle east ... is interesting!

... we have to always remember - HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THE WINNERS! ....too many people have a hollywood / fox news education today - it is sadly sickening how easily led the mass is!

As an enthusiastic voyeur on Media Manipulation and spin, 'de Grande Pre's Inside the Gates' is a complex insight into world politics and social corruption thru the manipulation of our way of thinking... just the way the word 'Democracy' has eroded the Republican Constitution that the 'united states' once stood for, is evidence of that. The World Banking/Corporate structure has become a Democratic bulldozer, clearing the way for its World Federation and one currency (credit) that will allow it to fully control all our lives and tax us ALL into poverty...

... just thru researching world current affairs in history and present day - like the UN staging 'theatrical wars' constantly and placing its own puppet rulers all over the world, the state of the US economy, the Chinese control of world imports, the UN Military industrial complex increased growth, the Banking/Corporate pyramids slow momentum to a New World Order - THIS IS ALL happening in OUR time and is extremely worrying for those who enjoy our present day freedoms, like commenting on it.

i recommend 'de Grand Pre's books with complete applause for his efforts to illuminate our minds into the hidden agenda of the 'wise ones' who we allow to decide our fates...

read his opinions and research his facts - then decide on your opinions... i have definitely been rewarded by the effort - it is a heavy read - but worth several reads to fully take in.
