The Lady's Will, by Raquel Rivers

When wealthy and eccentric Victoria Lancaster passes away, she leaves her niece Adele in charge of her Welsh estate. Demure Adele is suddenly thrust into a world she never imagined existed – one of opulence and servants. As she slowly discovers her aunt’s secret life, Adele finds her feminine power awakening and the men around her falling at her feet – all except the one she truly desires.

Will Adele tame the man she desires? What other secrets was Victoria hiding? Experience the decidedly kinky twists as Adele journeys from shy librarian to mistress of the house when she abides by the Lady’s will.

What readers are saying:

“If you liked 50 Shades of Grey you’ll like this book. If you didn’t like 50 Shades, you’ll love it. The characters are well-drawn and believable, the women are strong and empowered, and the main character’s transformation is a joy to behold. I’d love to see this one turned into a movie!”

“So good to read a book that has kink, character, and doesn’t demean women, but celebrates them. A welcome departure from the genre (I’m looking at you, 50 Shades, Bared to You…)”

“Smartly written, The Lady’s Will really transports you to a different world. It felt like I was there, in Wales, alongside the characters. Adele’s self-discovery is like watching a flower bloom, and Victoria’s charismatic and theatrical personality leaps off the page. A solid effort from this writer.”

From The Lady’s Will:

“For the sixth and final stroke, I decided to really let it fly. I swung hard. The cane cut through the air and bit into his flesh . . . My head swooned. I knew right then that I could never go back to dinner dates and conversations and polite sex. I had tasted power, and I liked its heady draught.”

Really wonderful read
By Larry
This novel was a great read, a real page turner. It's a story of a young woman finding her self esteem and power through femdom BDSM, and about the men around her finding happiness in submission. It's not too sexually explicit, not completely focused on the erotic aspects, but still manages to be very hot because the characters are so well drawn. This book tugs at the heartstrings more than the privates, which was not what I was expecting, but I absolutely loved it and the characters. What a great book!

A super fun read
By Amy Davis
I couldn't put this fun and enjoyable book down once started. This is how 50 Shades should have been! A nice respite from my usual paranormal romances.

Ancient EgyptFrom Oxford University Press

The ancient Egyptians lived in a remarkable culture that created some of the world's most beautiful art and architecture. It was a land where Pharaoh was the monarch of the entire world, the living emodiment on Earth of the god Horus, son of Osiris, ruler of the underworld. It was a culture that relied on the rising and falling of the Nile, but resided next to the Great Sahara, one of the hottest and driest deserts on the planet. Even today, the ancient civilization of Egypt--which produced the great pyramids, the riddle of the Sphinx, and the riches of Tutankhamum--exerts a strong hold on our imaginations.
Now, in Ancient Egypt, eminent Egyptologist David P. Silverman and a team of leading scholars explore the cultural wealth of this civilization in a series of intriguing and authoritative essays based on the latest theories and discoveries. Illustrated with more than 200 superb color photographs, maps, and charts, Ancient Egypt illuminates the vivid and powerful symbolic images of this fascinating culture--from pyramids and temples to priests and rituals; from hieroglyphic writing to daily life by the Nile; and from temple carvings to the cult of the dead. Correcting the popular misconception of the Egyptians as a death-obsessed people, the book uses the most recent historical research and archaeological finds to illuminate the routines of daily life in royal, élite, and priestly circles, as well as at lower levels of society.
We learn, for example, that despite the monochromatic appearance of most temple ruins today, in ancient times they would have been colorful, even gleaming structures; that the title "Pharaoh" derives from the Egyptian phrase per aa, which means "great house" and was originally a reference to the royal palace; that temples employed all manner of part-time and full-time personnel, from farmers and carpenters to scribes, jewellers, and keepers of livestock; and that Egyptian law viewed women as equal to men, and they could, in some cases, wield considerable influence.
Lavishly illustrated with beautiful color artwork, Ancient Egypt is an authoritative and accessible guide to the many dimensions of the ancient Egyptian world.

Review
Blend 200 newly-commissioned color art pieces and photos of architecture and tombs with the latest Egyptology scholarship and a focus on historical themes and you have a coverage by an Egyptologist and a team of scholars which competes well with any on the market. Essays on the latest discoveries provide central keys to understanding new development in Egyptology. -- Midwest Book Review

Its thematic organization provides a unique perspective on Ancient Egypt
By doc peterson
Organized by theme, Silverman's _Ancient Egypt_ provides an unusual approach to the topic. Divided into three parts (The Egyptian World, Belief and Ritual, Art, Architecture and Language), the subsequent chapters are written by a variety of scholars, each an expert in their fields (to name a few: Fekri Hassan a geo-archeologist formerly of Washington State, more recently at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture writing on commerce; Gay Robbins of Emory University on Women in Ancient Egypt, Ian Shaw of University of Liverpool on urban centers, Zahi Hawass - former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities on the Pyramids). These scholars provide a fresh take on Egyptian history.

I was particularly struck by the chapters on "The Celestial Realm" and "Tombs and Temples" as both provided unique details about Egyptian cosmology and the evolution of funerary architecture. The number of color plates and maps are also helpful and illustrative in connecting details to the larger historical narrative. However, I had problems with the historical narrative itself; in a few words, it was simply too brief. The opening chapter, "Three Kingdoms and Thirty-four Dynasties" covered the entirety of Ancient Egyptian history in 20 pages. While the ebbed flow of history was discussed well, one cannot adequately write a political history of the 2000 + years of Ancient Egyptian history in so few pages.

Further, the thematic nature of the book also meant that events or issues would be repeated in chapter after chapter. For example, the reign of Akhenaten is discussed several times: in the political history of the 18th dynasty, again in a chapter about cities and capitals, yet again in the discussion of art and architecture, and still again in the chapter about temples and tombs. While events and individuals like Akhenaten are repeatedly highlighted, other significant facets are overlooked or given short shrift (the Naqada period or the Second Intermediate Period).

While _The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt_ remains unrivaled in terms of its scholarship and depth, the strength of Silverman's thematic approach is the variety of perspectives is provides beyond the exclusively political. For those who already have a passing familiarity with Ancient Egypt but are searching for interesting details and a more social history approach to the time, this would be my recommendation.

This book has the best of the expert writing on their areas of expertise
By CatPaws
This book has the best of the expert writing on their areas of expertise. They all know how to tell you everything in a concise way in language that the average person can understand. The pictures, many I'd not seen before, are for the most part clear enough to make out things, maps and plans of ancient forts and temples homes, etc. are excellent with clear keys and explanations. If you wanted only one good book to read on Ancient Egypt, I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

Information in the book provides a good overview of Ancient Egypt
By Ann F. Rapp
Information in the book provides a good overview of Ancient Egypt. The writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand. The print is quite small which makes it hard to read, especially in the inserted boxes and sidebars. Recommended to go along with the Coursera course on Ancient Egypt.

The Griffin Mage (The Griffin Mage Trilogy), by Rachel Neumeier

The Griffin Mage trilogy, now complete in one volume, tells the story of the war between men and griffins --- and the young girl, torn between two worlds, who will decide the fate of all.

Little ever happens in the quiet villages of peaceful Feierabiand. The course of Kes' life seems set: she'll grow up to be an herb-woman and healer for the village of Minas Ford, never quite fitting in but always more or less accepted. And she's content with that path --- or she thinks she is.

Until the day the griffins come down from the mountains, bringing with them the fiery wind of their desert and a desperate need for a healer. But what the griffins need is a healer who is not quite human... or a healer who can be made into something not quite human.

This omnibus edition contains the complete Griffin Mage trilogy: Lord of the Changing Wind, Land of the Burning Sands and Law of the Broken Earth.

About the Author
Rachel Neumeier started writing fiction to relax when she was a graduate student and needed a hobby unrelated to her research. Prior to selling her first fantasy novel, she had published only a few articles in venues such as The American Journal of Botany. However, finding that her interests did not lie in research, Rachel left academia and began to let her hobbies take over her life instead. She now raises and shows dogs, gardens, cooks, and occasionally finds time to read. She works part time for a tutoring program, though she tutors far more students in Math and Chemistry than in English Composition.

Beautiful Imagery and Smart
By letterEletterD
Overall, I found this series lyrical, intelligent, and compelling. The books take place one after another, and many characters repeat, but the main characters of each book are different. My favorite part of the series is even when you dislike a character, you get the sense that if the story were told from their perspective, your feelings would be reversed--and indeed, in other books that is often the case.

Lord of the Changing Winds

I think the blurb does not do a very good job of introducing this book. Here's my version:

Kes, a farm girl living on the border of Feieraband, and Bertaud, Lord of the Delta, are about to meet in the most unexpected of circumstances. Griffins have invaded Feieraband, and the majestic creatures will bring forth powers in both of youths that they never dreamed of. But the griffins are a percursor to a much a greater danger to the people Kes and Bertaud love...Can they save their country without losing themselves?

Now, knowing the main characters are a youths of opposite genders, you might immediately think, "love story," but this is not. It is a an adventure novel of politics and magic, and it does raise questions about human nature, but not of that kind. It is written lyrically and beautifully, with a minimally , but intricately wrought, system of magic dependent on the elements. The characters are strong, interesting, and often surprised me. It reminded me a little of Tolkien, but more compelling written. (I don't mean to bash Tolkien there, I just mean his books are not particularly suspenseful. These are, but Neumeier also has a lot of the stateliness of his writing and rich descriptions.) I thoroughly enjoyed the first novel and was eager to read the next.

Land of the Burning Sands

Gereint was enslaved through a geas to pay for his crime, but he has managed to free himself from that harsh burden. Tehre is a brillant philosopher and engineer, so distracted by the equations in her mind that she has trouble focusing on the mundane. When the griffins try to destroy Casmantium, they must push the limits of their abilities to save their country.

Kes is only seen from a distance in this novel (as are the griffins), but Bertaud ends up being Tehre's traveling companion for a good portion of the novel. People have commented this books could stand alone, but I have to stay that having read the first book and knowing Bertaud's character and backgroundmakes this book far richer. The academic Tehre was a really fun character for me, and having fair bit of background with material science from my family, I found myself interested and amused by her ramblings on the subject--but I could easily see people being bored by her bookish tone and the fact you often don't quite get what she is saying. I would say I enjoyed this better than the first book, but only if I suspended my disbelief regarding the love story between Gereint and Tehre--I could not quite believe that her family would happily accept a man who committed a double murder, no matter that is was a crime of passion or that it happened 19 years ago. Also, Tehre forces him to do something using his geas that I think was a REALLY big deal, that Gereint would have been really upset by, but it is pretty much waved off as justified. Also, while this book ends with the two characters essentially pledging eternity to each other, it is definitely not a love story either.

Law of the Broken Earth

This book broke the pattern of the first two books quite a bit and it bothered me. We have Mienthe's perpestive thoughout, Tan's in the first half, and Jos in the second half. It felt like poor planning. Everything from earlier books is resolved, and this is indeed the culmination of the series. However, again, it felt like it had not been planned properly to me. The first two books read like adventure novels and this one was trying to be high fantasy, save-the-world-and-all-that. Still, I did enjoy the writing and the characters. Once again, there are two love stories embedded in the overall plot that did not seem believable to me. I was not convinced that these characters were actually in love with each other--it's like Neumeier skips the part where they fall in love and just busts out full-blown devotion when the moment is right. I feel the book would be better without the love stories because the characters are strong and fun...and having them full in love so superficially does them injustice.

I would say the last book deserves a little less than four stars, but I think the first two are winners.

good worldbuilding, stories are a bit rough though
By Dinogrrl
The author is extremely talented at worldbuilding, and obviously really loves that world and the characters in it. However, the books are a tad rough around the edges. There are some internal inconsistencies, and pacing is not exactly the author's strong suite. Personally, I'm not keen on the writing style (and there were some blatant editing errors in the editions I read), and I wasn't totally gung-ho about all the main characters, but I still enjoyed all three books. The author's love of her creation won me over! If you want stories with a complex world and griffins, I recommend picking this up.

How delightful to get all three books in one. Four and hlaf stars, really.
By Lewis B. Hayes
First, I am thoroughly impressed by Rachel Neumeier's character development of the main protagonists. Each is unique, reasonably complex, and behaves in a manner consistent with the characters she gave them. She is equally adept and putting you in the character of the key men as well as the two young women, a really difficult job for an author of any gender. Even the griffins have personalities (griffinalities?) that are complex and interesting. Of course, once you suspend disbelief enough to deal with the existence of griffins and their fiery natures, it becomes a little easier to get drawn in. The secondary characters, in contrast, tend to be painted more one dimensionally to a stereotype rather than a person. It's rather a nit, and after all, they are not the main characters of the book(s).
Second, the three books do seem to be able to stand alone. Of course, as I read them all together in sequence that is a bit difficult to judge, but each has its own main character and plot. There is minimal reliance on antecedent action from one to the next, but having the details from the previous book(s) makes you feel like you're in on the secret. It's difficult to do and Ms. Neumeier pulls it off admirably.
Third, the adventures are fast paced, interesting, and fun to read. There is plenty of suspense, an appropriate number of plot twist and turns, and surprises that really fit well despite their surprise. Then endings of the first two books wrap things up nicely, and while you want more, they don't leave you hanging or wanting some important details resolved.
Fourth are my issues with the last book. While I could wrap my head around the various talents and types of mages in the first two books, I had more of a problem with the ones here. A talent as a "maker" (book 2) or a "legist" seems reasonable, but attributing magical properties to a talent with contracts and laws never seemed to make much sense to me. While this is one of the key premises of the third book, it is such a bizarre concept that I could never grasp it. I also felt that the resolution at the end left me with more questions than answers. I won't reveal the denouement, but I did feel like there needed to be a better explanation of why Tan had exhibited traits to the mages that had them believe that reality was revolving around him. And what was it that made the "book" everybody was looking for so much more than a book? How did that come about? What had been its significance before Tan had looked at it? Why had he been drawn to it? And what's with the spirals?
Anyway, despite some disappointment with the last book, I highly recommend it.

Principles of Planology: Grondslagen der planologie (Studies in International Planning History), by JM de Casseres

Between the World Warsthe talent of Dutch town planner J.M. de Casseres (1902-1990) found expression in two visionary books and a clutch of influential articles.In an in-depth article published in February 1929 in the magazine De Gids under the title 'Grondslagen der planologie' (Principles of Planology) he invented a term for the new social-scientific discipline that would eventually enter the Dutch language.

De Casseres made it his life's work to elevate the art and craft of town planning to academic status, classifying the international planning body of knowledge and making it accessible and applicable. The results of this internationally supported body of knowledge are reflected not only in de Casseres's publications but also in a string of urban design proposals for towns across the Netherlands.

This republication of the De Gids article alongside five other influential de Casseres articles in translation and their original Dutch language form brings this key thinker into reach for a wider research audience.

The New Quantum Age: From Bell's Theorem to Quantum Computation and Teleportation, by Andrew Whitaker

Ever since its discovery eighty-five years ago, quantum theory has been used to study the physical universe with great profit, both intellectual and financial. Over the last fifty years, however, we have found out more and more about the theory itself, and what it tells us about the universe. It seems we may have to accept non-locality - cause and effect may be light-years apart; loss of realism - nature may be fundamentally probabilistic; and non-determinism - it seems that God does play dice!

This book, written by an expert in the field, explains the emergence of our new perspective on quantum theory, but also describes how the ideas involved in this re-evaluation led seamlessly to a totally new discipline -quantum information theory. This discipline includes quantum computation, which is able to perform tasks quite out of the range of other computers; the totally secure algorithms of quantum cryptography; and quantum teleportation - as part of science fact rather than science fiction.

The book is the first to combine these elements, and will be of interest to anybody interested in fundamental aspects of science and their application to the real world.

Review
"During this century there has been an explosion in interest in fundamental issues in quantum mechanics, especially about the mysterious properties of entanglement. Interestingly, many of these studies into the fundamentals of quantum mechanics are driven and motivated by technological quests.
This book is ideally placed to tap into this genuine enthusiasm about the fundamental and applied nature of the mysteries at the heart of quantum mechanics."

Another excellant book from Andrew Whitaker
By Allan Moose
This is a nice work on the history of quantum mechanics since the 1950s. Whitaker describes the closed atmosphere that many of us in physics lived through after WW II and into the late 1970s when to disagree with the Copenhagen Interpretation was the death knell for your career. He shows the role of John Bell who carefully started a revolution in thinking all the while maintaining a career at CERN. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid of a few equations.

ALL IN ALL AN EXCELLENT BOOK
By SURENDRA KUMAR SAGAR
`THE NEW QUANTUM AGE` BY ANDREW WHITAKER
Reviewed by S.K.SAGAR
```This is another outstanding `Five Star` book. I have never reviewed any ..other than `Five Star`.
It is expensive ... so I kept renewing from the British Library number of times ..till I finished reading and had made enough notes on the parts I liked, and there are many.
I am quite used to Andrew Whitaker`s unique style of writing. I have read one of his other books ``Einstein Bohr and the Quantum Dillemma`` which is there on my shelf. He goes into enormous detail, cutting open all the theories to near quantum levels, appreciating the theories he likes and understanding and explaining the others , without being critical of their authors, and giving all the Scientists involved, due respect. His ultimate aim - after an analytical review of all the viewpoints of the various Scientists – is to develop an understanding of the subject that makes the best sense.
His elaborate coverage of the Einstein Bohr debate in `EBATQD` as well as in this book, is spellbinding. In the end if I am asked the question..``Who won the debate ?, my answer would be `Neither Einstein nor Bohr lost the debate` ``.
My review of `The New Quantum age` like my review of another book viz ``Information and the nature of reality`` edited by Paul Davies and Gregerson, is I am afraid somewhat self centred as I try to correlate it with my philosophical views as expressed in my first book` Six Words` and in my next book `Intelligent Field`. The common denominators are that ...``It is the Information in the field which is responsible for the phenomena`` ... that ``Our universe is a quantum computer, that keeps computing its own behaviour`` .. and that ``things are getting more and more complex all the time``.
Having said that I now focus on the part of the book which is in support of my viewpoints expressed above. So I go to Part III of the book ``An introduction to Quantum Information Theory``...Chapter 15 ..``Knowledge, Information, and ( a little about) Quantum Information``.
As the Scientist Lee Smolin (page 291 of the book) said : ``There are only four prolbems which the Scientists have not been able to solve so far. These are:
1) How to combine quantum theory and general relativity to produce a single theory ( of quantum gravity) that can claim to be a complete theory of matter.
2) How to combine all the particles and forces in today`s physics to give a theory as manifestations of a fundamental unity.
3) To explain how the values of the free constants in the standard model of particle physics ( the masses and life times of the various elementary particles ) are chosen in nature.
4) To explain the existence and properties of dark matter and dark energy. ``
Smolin feels that the above four problems will not be solved in isolation, and that the solution of these great problems will come together. A possible way forward -- also suggested by Smolin – is to give up the attempt to apply quantum theory to the universe as a whole and to regard quantum theory as the record of quantum information that one sub system may have about another sub system as a result of their mutual interaction. In this way ideas from the study of quantum information may demonstrate how elementary particles may emerge from quantum space –time.
In other words the universe -- as suggested by the Scientist Seth LLyod - can be considered as a quantum computer. One may ask the question ..`But what does the Universe compute ?.`. Seth Llyod gives the answer : `` It computes its own behaviour. At first the patterns it produces are simple, but as it processes more and more information, it produces more intricate and complex patterns – on the physical side giving rise to galaxies, stars, and planets, while on the human side, producing life, language, human beings, society and culture.``
In subsequent chapters, it is explained that a classical computer cannot simulate a quantum mechanical system, so the Universe being quantum mechanical , cannot be considered a classical computer, and can only be a quantum computer.
My own idea is that all this happens in a field, and when sufficient information is accumulated in the field, it becomes an `Intelligent Field`, where the Intelligence in the field keeps increasing all the time, and this intelligence like that of an `Infinite Mind` is focussed on creating biochemistries suitable for creating awarenesses and consciousnesses etc to understand itself. Hence that portion of the computation which the universe does, which is attributed to the intelligence of the Intelligent Field is not completely in the domain of `quantum computation` ... to some extent it could even be called `classical computation`.
It could also be that the Intelligent Field is itself a product of simulation which then simulates the universe?. and it goes on and on ...step by step...trillions and trillions of intermediate steps, through trillions of years and countless eons of the universe. And with each simulation the complexities increase. It must have been very very very simple in the very very very beginning. A universe from nothing at all. It could be that we the human beings are an `Intermediate step`.
This viewpoint also encapsulates the Anthropic Principle and explains what happens when a new eon of the universe is created.... ``All the information is available in the field.... all the constants of nature are already known to the Intelligence in the Field , its just the `switching on` that is needed. ``
Whether to call it as `Intelligent Field` ..or an `Infinite Mind` ... or `God` is of course just a matter of taste. The Theists can call it `God`, and the Atheists should be happy to call it as `IF` or `IM`whatever. The dispute should end.
John C Bell who is the hero of the book, is also my hero. I have written extensively about him and about his `Inequality idea` in my book `Six Words`. To have come out with an idea that it is possible to design an experiment to show that an `Inequality` which is a direct consequence of the assumption of local realism is violated, is nothing short of ingenious. The book can be taken more or less as Bell`s biography. I like (very much) the chapter on ``Bell`s last thoughts`` ( chapter 14) where he discusses the ``Six possible worlds of quantum Mechanics``. These are actually three worlds relating to three different aspects of quantum mechanics, and each world is divided into two parts viz an ``Unromantic world`` which corresponds to his favourite interpretation on that aspect, and a ``Romantic world`` corresponding to his bugbear. This is very interesting and amusing, but I am not going to reveal these here – let the reader find out on his own – except to say that in one of them I find the `Romantic world` part makes more sense.
The best line of the book for me is where Bell admits, in fact that he is convinced that ``Mind has a central place in the ultimate nature of reality``
The ``Infinite mind` of the ``Intelligent Field`` I guess
I am thrilled.
All in all ... An excellent book
This is my fourth review. ```
sedcond quantum revolution
By P. Melecrinis
The book is on quantum entanglement and not on the second quantum revolution, as the title suggests.
The second quantum revolution in based on quantum technology, manipulation of singles particles, atoms, photons, etc. (development of experimental physics). Maybe the beginning can be the realization of the SCT (scanning tunnel microscope).
The book is organized in three parts. The first part is on the first quantum revolution, the quantum mechanics. The second part (Half of the book) is on Bell inequalities and their testing, third part on quantum information.
So the book is Bell centered and limited, as quantum technology is more extended. I share the Feynman opinion on Bell inequality and the relevant experiments; maybe it is not a real quantum revolution.
Besides it presents the quantum computer as really more powerful of classical computers, but the real power of quantum computer is still unknown. From the theoretical point of view, there is a non null probability that they are polinomially equivalent to classical computers. Besides it is not clear the physical feasibility for the scale necessary to running useful algorithms. Furthermore they are software controlled, so it is necessary to use also a classical computer to run the program, etc.
Also quantum cryptography in reality is limited to the QKD (quantum key distribution), so classical cryptology is still needed.
It would be interesting at least to explore the possible realizations of computers with nanotechnologies.
In conclusion, I have found the book biased; it express only a possible point of view.
