Fabulous well written book that can build a deeper understanding of undocumented immigration

I'm teaching this book in an introductory college class with fantastic results. It combines compelling personal stories of 10 undocumented immigrants with great historical and public policy discussions that helps my students understand the history of interconnections between Mexico and the US, the complex reasons people migrate and the effects of US immigration policies. It addresses one of the most contentious debates in America with the fairness, dignity and complexity it deserves. I would strongly recommend it for a range of classes -- It would work in introductory anthropology, ethnic studies, urban studies courses as well as in other courses that explore globalization, immigration and public policy. It's accessible enough for introductory students but not at all over-simplified. A perfect mix.

Coherent, Well-Researched Account and Analysis of a Group of Very Interesting People

I had this book assigned for a class, but once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I even stayed up very very late to finish. The book follows a group of of normal guys and tells their stories as people without papers. It doesn't try to demonize or canonize them as saints. It only shows them as human beings trying to adapt and survive in a unique situation. Furthermore, there is no unnecessary victimization of the workers in this book. Rather, the author tries to show them as active agents with limited choices.
While the day-to-day personal narrative portions keep the reader very interested, these are interspersed among insightful sections of well-researched analysis and historical/political context.
I learned a lot from this book and I would recommend it highly to anyone who has even a small interest in immigration and the lives of immigrants.

a must-read on immigration

A friend of mine recommended this book, which is about undocumented immigration from the point of view of undocumented workers. I was skeptical, because I have no tolerance for political rhetoric, but this book is humanizing and easy to access. In fact, it reads sort of like a novel, in that it draws you in with personal stories, but it also seems to be well-researched with smart political and historical analysis. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information about migration in the United States. I learned more about undocumented migration from reading this book than I have from following the news for the last five years.

In this analogy, how deep one dives to recover the balloons represents the threshold of detection. How often one dives represents the frequency of screening. The prevalence screening test is portrayed as the first dive, and incidence screening tests as subsequent dives. The balloon analogy makes the concepts of cancer yield, detection stage, lead time, and sojourn time understandable. In his subsequent discussions of the controversy regarding the screening of women 40 to 49 years of age, the author explains how various experts reached opposite conclusions after reviewing the same data. Kopans presents a convincing case for beginning annual screening at the age of 40 but gives the reader enough unbiased data to reach an independent conclusion.

Half of this book is devoted to topics found in traditional mammography textbooks, but Kopans presents this material so well that physicians other than radiologists will gain insight into the intriguing process of how screening and diagnostic mammography work. The process begins with the challenge of finding the subtlest deviation from "normal," determining whether the deviation is real, locating it in three dimensions from various mammographic views, forming an opinion of what it is by means of additional mammographic views and other imaging tests, and finally advising on a strategy for follow-up or invasive procedures. To gain an appreciation of this chain of events is reason enough to read Kopan's book. An extremely useful feature of the book is that one or two key sentences in each figure legend have been printed in boldface type, enabling readers to virtually skip the text, skim the figures, and absorb the major points efficiently. Yet the more than 800 illustrations and tables are so well selected, sequenced, and reproduced that they invite the reader to explore the text further for more details.

Kopans discusses how, after the completion of breast-imaging studies, the radiologist, using commonly defined terminology, should compose a report that briefly describes the mammographic findings and provides clear recommendations for management. Regardless of how thoroughly the book is read, the reader will reach the inescapable conclusion that the evaluation of mammograms is an inexact science. This conclusion is not surprising, since pathologists working at a much higher level of resolution cannot always easily distinguish between benign growths and malignant disease. Interpreting breast-imaging studies requires making a trade-off between sensitivity and specificity: maximizing early cancer detection while maintaining acceptable rates of repeated testing and biopsy.

The radiologist continues to have a role after the biopsy of a nonpalpable lesion is advised, either by providing preoperative guidance of needle localization for an excisional biopsy or by performing a core biopsy guided by radiography or ultrasonography. The discussion of these techniques considers the reasons core biopsy has been accepted as an alternative to needle-guided excisional biopsy without its having been subjected to adequate scientific scrutiny. Whether or not one agrees with the author, his opinions are always thought-provoking. In this instance and throughout the book, he questions the justification for every diagnostic protocol and never accepts old or new dogma at face value. One of the book's final chapters, on the medicolegal aspects of breast imaging, which in other hands could have been a dry legalistic discourse, is instead filled with perceptive observations that get right to the central problems of our highly flawed medicolegal system. Breast Imaging is an extraordinary book.

Very well written and very good information

I am a physician interested in women's breast health. I found this textbook to be an amazing wealth of information. It is well written and practical, not overly laden with statistics and facts that clutter up pages of information. It is clear, concise and to the point. With all the rhetoric about breast cancer, and treating every case aggressively, it was refreshing to see statements like these reinforced by a medical text book:

"It is fairly clear that not all breast cancers are lethal. Of course, DCIS is rarely lethal (less than 1%) but even invasive breast cancers may be indolent."

"Many breast cancers will not be lethal even if they are not detected early...As our screening tests become more sensitive and begin to find smaller cancers, the number of cancers that have no lethal potential may increase. It will become increasingly important to develop ways to determine which of those cancers may or may not be lethal so that we do not overtreat nonlethal lesions."

"Even the fastest-growing tumors were present and undiscovered for 9 years before reaching 2cm, while the slowest-growing lesions may have been developing in the breast for as long as 29 years."

Truly, the identification of a breast cancer is not a 5-alarm fire. No one is bleeding or choking to death. Women have time to get second opinions, consider the correct course of treatment, consider their options. The rush from the mammogram suite to the surgical suite is extreme and unnecessary.

I have enjoyed this text. Much of it is highlighted, underlined and tabbed with sticky notes. While written by a radiologist, it is not just about "imaging." It is written in language that can be fully understood by all physicians and even lay persons who are investigating/researching all elements of the conventional approach to breast disease.

The reason for the 4-star instead of a 5-star rating is that not one word was written about the value of infrared breast imaging and the important role it should play in women's breast health. The text books, Medical Devices and Systems (The Biomedical Engineering Handbook, Third Edition) and Medical Infrared Imaging have hundreds of studies and mainstream documentation that has been ignored. Breast thermography is a way to identify very early physiological changes that can be addressed, removing inflammation, restoring health to the tissues and lowering the risk for development of mammogram-evident cancer. This text, while called "Breast Imaging" sadly does not include infrared imaging which should become a core part of all screening.

All of us in radiology know Dr. Kopans. His book is great for fellows and can be useful for residents. Make sure you purchase the third edition; the chapter on MRI was rewritten.

"The birth of Bangladesh" despite US, China and Pakistan.

The recent declassification of US Government archives has provided a rich mine of information on US behavior during the1971 war between India and Pakistan that liberated Bangladesh.

B Z Khasru, a US based journalist, has done extensive research of this newly declassified data to bring additional information about the 1971 events.

It was Bhutto, not Mujib, who broke Pakistan, says General Yahya Khan in an affidavit issued just before his death. All that Mujib-ur-Rahman wanted was for Bengal to have its fair share of growth, jobs, public purse and foreign aid; and the opportunity to grow through trade with India. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had a tacit preference to let East Pakistan secede (and leave the West to be governed by Bhutto) than be subject to a weak federation ruled by Bengalis. Bhutto preferred power than Pakistan.

Yahya was no angel either. His motivation to conduct elections was the probability of getting to stay in power for a long period of time since his Intelligence officers advised him that the elections might not result in a clear majority and the framing of a new constitution within 120 days after the elections is unlikely. His allusion to Mujib as the future PM of Pakistan was more to scare the politicians in the West and the army to unite.

However, Khasru's book is more about how US misplaced its principles and misread the tea leaves.

Nixon and Kissinger saw the entire problem through the narrow prism of securing friendship with China through the benevolence of Yahya Khan.

1. The aspirations of 75 million people in the East and the genocide unleashed on them were not important. When US Consul at Dacca, Archer Blood, accused the US Government of "moral bankruptcy" for its "posture of pretending to believe Pakistan Government's false assertions", Nixon recalled Blood and transferred him to Personnel.

2. The focus was on keeping Yahya Khan pleased since he was the conduit to the secret parley with China. US would continue to publicly support Yahya's unified Pakistan; if East Pakistan requires US support, US would decline to give such a support "based on the premise that in US opinion West Pakistan would not use force to bring a solution".

Nixon and Kissinger were amazingly consistent in "misreading" the tea leaves:

1. Kissinger theorized that India would not want an independent Bangladesh since that would induce India's West Bengal province to secede from India and unite with Bangladesh!

2. Nixon preferred to support Pakistan wherever possible because "Yahya was more decent to US than Indira Gandhi was". Kissinger agreed, "Yahya was decent and reasonable if not politically smart".

3. Kissinger felt Indian occupation of Bangladesh would make Pakistan's look like child play. When Indian army entered Dacca, Nixon asked: "You see those people welcoming the Indian troops. Why then are we going through this agony?" Kissinger replied: "To prevent the West Pakistan army from being destroyed; to retain our Chinese arm; to preserve balance of power with the Soviet Union".

Nixon had a strong bias against India. In his private conversations with Kissinger, Indians were referred to as "cowards" and "savages". Nixon tried to support Pakistan in several ways:

1. When his State department disagreed with Kissinger that US owed arms support to Pakistan (when Pakistan invoked the bilateral agreement with US and sought arms), Nixon orchestrated provision through intermediary countries. Jordan did provide aircrafts and pilots to Pakistan. Iran agreed to but rescinded in the last minute. Kissinger admitted in 1972 to China that US supplied arms via third countries. The augmentation did not have an impact.

2. Nixon urged China to move troops to the Indian border saying "The Indians have got to get a little scared". China did not oblige because of its concerns about Soviet intervention under the Indo Soviet treaty.

3. Nixon moved US Seventh fleet to Bay of Bengal to increase threat perceptions though this did not have any impact on the war.

4. Nixon warned Soviet Union that any help to India would leave a scar in US-Soviet relationship for many years after the war ended. Nixon told a visiting Soviet minister: "The Indians are cowards. They are raping and murdering. They are pretty vicious". (Historians would consider this to be a Presidential lie). Kissinger felt Nixon's statement would make Soviets reduce their support to India. They did not.

In Khasru's book, Indira Gandhi emerges as a good leader. She worked on domestic opinion before supporting Mukti Bahini. She worked on international opinion before invading East Pakistan. She read the geopolitical scenario rightly and concluded a treaty with the Soviet Union to ensure China does not start any conflict to step up pressure against India. She was firm in declining to conform to UN resolution (orchestrated by Nixon) to ceasefire and withdraw from each other's territories (the usual end for every India Pakistan war in the past).

In the end it came down to Nixon and Kissinger not reading an important import of that amazing document, the Declaration of Independence in US: "Whenever any government becomes destructive of man's inalienable rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, it was the right of the people to alter or abolish it".

About the Author

Xin Guo is the Coleman Fung Chair Professor of Financial Modeling in the department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, UC Berkeley. She founded the Berkeley Risk Analysis and Data Analytics Research (RADAR) Lab and holds a courtesy appointment with the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Prior to UC Berkeley, she was a Research Staff Member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center and an Associate Professor at Cornell University. Her main research interests are stochastic control, stochastic processes and applications. In addition to high frequency trading modeling and analysis, her recent research includes singular controls, impulse controls, non-linear expectations, mean-field games, and filtration enlargement with application to credit risk.

Tze Leung Lai is a Professor of Statistics and, by courtesy, of Health Research and Policy in the School of Medicine and of the Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering (ICME) in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. He is Director of the Financial and Risk Modeling Institute, Co-Director of the Biostatistics Core of the Stanford Cancer Institute, and Co-Director of the Center for Innovative Study Design at the Stanford School of Medicine. He has held regular and visiting faculty appointments at Columbia University, UC Berkeley, and Nankai University, and holds advisory positions with the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Tsinghua University.

The text is arranged in three sections: an introduction to human reproductive systems and areas vulnerable to damage; a comprehensive review of metals, organic solvents, pesticides, and endocrine disrupters in our food, air, and water and the dangers to human reproductive physiology caused by exposure even in small quantities; and an analysis of the regulatory agencies and legislation designed to protect public health and the weaknesses and failures of those approaches. Strategies are presented for assessing environmental threats in our daily lives and taking action to minimize or eliminate them. The book's scholarly presentation, which includes statistics, illustrations, tables, anecdotal information from actual cases, and 60 pages of references, is most appropriate for an audience with some understanding of scientific terminology and research methods. Gina Solomon, M.D., M.P.H., is a Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. Maria Valenti is a researcher, writer, and consultant on environmental and social justice issues. Annette Huddle, M.E.S., is a writer and environmental educator.

A perfect blend of detail, well thought out analysis of its meaning and plausible plan of action. Definitely not pleasure reading but if you are curious about the subject, definitely a good place to start.

this book is as information-dense as one could hope for. it seemed as non-biased as it is possible to be considering the subject of the book and the authors' intentions in writing the book. it goes into much detail regarding different reproductive toxins and how and why they affect humans and animals. it also explains the different damages the chemicals effect. in the latter part of the book it also explains the regulatory system in the united states of america and how it is in parts beneficial and detrimental to the effective regulation and safe use of the discussed chemicals.
