About the Author
Garth Greenwell is the author of Mitko, which won the 2010 Miami University Press Novella Prize and was a finalist for the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction and a Lambda Award. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he holds graduate degrees from Harvard University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was an Arts Fellow. His short fiction has appeared in The Paris Review and A Public Space. What Belongs to You is his first novel.

Beautifully written, deeply felt...Greenwell will have one heck of a career ahead of him!

Some books dazzle you with plot twists and action, yet some books can truly wow you with the power of their storytelling, their language, and their imagery. Garth Greenwell's debut novel, What Belongs to You, definitely falls into the latter category. It's stunning, emotional, lyrical, and it quietly grabs you and doesn't let go.
One unseasonably warm afternoon in October, our narrator, an American teacher living in Bulgaria, goes to a restroom in Sofia's National Palace of Culture. This is a restroom where men go to have sexual encounters, and he is aware of this, but meeting Mitko, a young hustler, takes him by surprise. He pays Mitko for sex, and finds himself immensely drawn to him, so he returns to that restroom over and over. And although he knows inherently that Mitko is going through the motions with him as he probably does with his other "friends," he still hopes that he might find his way into Mitko's heart.

He comes to terms with the fact that while Mitko may enjoy their encounters, ultimately Mitko sees him as a source for money, and there is a fine line between knowing you're being used and fearing you may be harmed as a result. As he tries to decide what to do with Mitko, an urgent message forces him to confront his own childhood, and the mistreatment and veiled disgust with which he was treated once he accepted his sexuality. He also tries to decipher the patterns in his behavior that has led him to the same situations time and time again.

What Belongs to You is a novel about desire, and the desire to be wanted. It's about the struggle between following your heart and your libido instead of your head, and both the consequences and triumphs that come from doing so. It's also about how the hardest thing to do is reconcile your own issues with self-esteem, and finally realize only you can be responsible for your happiness and satisfaction.
Greenwell's talent is evident from the very first lines of this book, and his poetic use of language and storytelling ability sustains through the book's entirety. I truly cared about the narrator and worried what would become of him, hoping against hope that Greenwell wouldn't abandon the purity of his story for the sensational, and was so pleased he didn't. This is a beautiful, magnificent, deeply felt book, and I felt privileged to read it. I can't wait to see where Greenwell's career takes him—I know I'll be following.

A beautiful novel about the choice between lust and love, and about the mysterious nature of human motivations

This powerful novel sings the song of praise for the ways unrestrained lust gets fully satisfied in the dark venues of the promiscuous man-to-man sex-trade. The narrator wonders whether he is in love with the handsome, alcoholic, twenty-three year-old Bulgarian hustler Mitko, but when it comes to actually finding out whether love is the force driving this relationship, the arguments invariably lead to the boundless pleasures the narrator finds in Mitko’s crotch. By contrast, his attempted monogamous sexual activities with a Portuguese man are found to pale when compared with what Mitko offered. In final analysis, we are told that in sex any restrictions, in particular the restrictions placed by the socially acceptable rules of monogamy, tend to dilute the power and beauty of the sexual act. After all, the sexual act has the marvelous feature that the egoistic pursuit of maximal sexual pleasure demands the altruistic act of giving pleasure to one’s partner, for this enhances the pleasure one gets. This is probably the most beautiful use of egoism by man. It is also worth remembering that monogamy in gay sex is not needed to make sure that one is the father of one’s partner’s children, whereas in the millennia before DNA analysis became possible, monogamy in straight sex was justified as the best way to take care of this problem.
Having all this story play itself out in Bulgaria, one of the poorest countries in Europe, with all the environmental damage inflicted by more than half a century of communist rule, gives it the right dark color. The backwardness is constantly felt at many levels in this novel. Even the perils of the depicted lifestyle and their consequences are backward: Mitko is not addicted to drugs, as he would have been had he been born in XXth century America, he is alcoholic as he could have been in XIXth century Bulgaria, and the STD he infects his partners with is not AIDS, the XXI century STD, but rather syphilis, a disease one associates with the pre-antibiotic XIXth century. The author even mentions Gustave Flaubert, though with equal effect he could have ticked off a whole list of XIXth century major artists who came down with this disease: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Gaetano Donizetti, to mention but three composers.
Stylistically, the book is rich. A few small quibbles: The narrator seems afflicted with a predilection for climbing “hills,” one such climb even destroys his shoes; There is also a stylistic device whereby the narrator states his view of the motivation of some characters’ actions, and in the next sentence strongly qualifies what he has just said. Used a few times, this is a clever way of showing how hard it is to really understand human motivations, but in my opinion this device is overused to a point where it starts sounding like a mannerism. I mentioned this because the very title of the novel, “What Belongs to You” indicates that the author was deeply interested in exposing how our motivations and therefore also the traits we acquire (traits that now “belong to us”) are ill-defined.
The novel flows beautifully, continuously keeping the reader’s interest. The author keeps finding what the just mentioned Gustave Flaubert called les mots justes.
In brief, this is a gorgeous novel.

Grate Gay Novels- Yes, Grate

This novel took me a while to warm up to, Most of it concerns a relationship of an older man with Mitko, a Bulgarian rentboy. I thought the author did a great job of describing both the rentboy and the customer and creating the proper feelings that each would have. This relationship may be novel to many readers, but for older gay men who have seen many of their friends go though the exact same thing, it is nothing new. Older man falls for younger rentboy, thinks there might be something there, learns- usually the hard way- that the boy is only interested in the wallet. That the boy has problems is common. A reviewer for The New Republic describes this novel as "The Great Gay Novel For Our Times." To that I say "hogwash" with as much emphasis as I can. The great gay novel that is about a man who cannot express properly his gay feelings and must resort to commercial sex is not a great gay novel. Yes, it may be a good one. But here we have a man who could not open himself up to others. Most gay men defy that categorization. My other problem with the novel is the wasted space where we are told in such detail on his walks about the broken cement, the muddy shoes, the abandoned condom. All of that more than once. Welearn in detail about a cathedral where construction had failed. Why? The digression that occurs when he hears about his father's illness is also a wasted opportunity, one never resolved anyway. The visit from his mother is dispensed with in a few sentences. Then they got on a train and the author spends pages-pages!- about a young boy who shared the same rail car. Who cared? I came to this novel because the author wrote a review for The Atlantic of the novel "A Little Life." Greenwell thinks that that novel is "the great gay novel." My "hogwash" epithet began at that moment as I saw the novel as homophobic. A female author writing about gay relationships features men who deny that they are gay or even a part of the gay community. Other men who prey on vulnerable young boys are pedophiles, not gay men taking part in the great gay novel. There is only one real gay character in that novel. If these two reviewers want to pat themselves for finding the great gay novel, well they are hallucinating.
