Paul Rand : A Designer's Art, by Paul Rand

Paul Rand (1914-1996) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design whose career spanned almost seven decades. Always enquiring and investigating, he explored the formal vocabulary of European avant-garde art movements and synthesised them to produce a distinctive graphic language. Rand was a major force in editorial design, advertising and corporate identity. He was art director at "Esquire" and "Apparel Arts" magazines, and he designed the ground-breaking covers for the cultural journal "Direction". He worked at the Weintraub Advertising Agency from 1941-1954 and, in 1955, established his own design studio, acting as consultant to companies such as IBM, Westinghouse and UPS. His logos for these companies are world-renowned design classics. This book comprises a definitive collection of Rand's works, through an exploration of his advertising, publishing and corporate identity work. Steven Heller's text, with a foreword by designer Armin Hofmann, introduction by advertising guru George Lois, and a concluding essay by designer and writer Jessica Helfand, offer an insight into Paul Rand's work.

Just OK

The book was extremely well written, but it was the content I was diappointed with. I expected more info on basic design techniques. It seemed more of a picture book.

A Designer's Inspiration
By Rich Stoehr
Reading Paul Rand's book "A Designer's Art" should be a source of inspiration for anyone who considers him- or herself a designer -- in any medium. At least, it was definitely an inspiration for me.

I didn't expect to get much out of it when I started it, frankly. Part of that feeling is attributable to the fact that I didn't know Rand's work as well as I should. I had heard the name, but did not know what he had done. As the book began, and I figured out that he is, in a large way, responsible for the corporate identity of some pretty big names (IBM, Westinghouse, and UPS among them), and is capable of working in multiple media, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, I found myself respecting him. As it continued and he showed himself to be not only a very creative designer, but also a thoughtful analyst and an excellent communicator, I found myself agreeing with most of what he had to say. As the book concluded, I found myself inspired in my own work by what he pointed out.

"A Designer's Art" is everything its title implies... it is about good design and it is about compelling art. The two, while not necessarily the same, are definitely fused together in many ways. Artistic disciplines and methods and trends affect design work to a large extent, while principles of good design can also be applied to the basic creative process one goes through when making a more purely artistic endeavour.

Particularly compelling in this regard was the chapter near the end of the book, about the benefits of the "play instinct" and how it applies to design. By discussing several games and ways of playing with visual relationships, such as tangrams, tatami (the arranging of floor mats), Le Corbusier's "Modulor," and the creation of Chinese characters, Rand discusses several games and how they can be used in the design process, either in the solution for a specific problem, or as tasks in and of themselves. These "games" help to teach the designer to look at visual presentations in a different way, to see tired concepts in a new light, and to use originality to think their way around a problem. Like directed play does for children, visual games help to discipline the mind to see through what is presented and into an original way of looking at the same thing. "The student learns to conceptualize, to associate, to make analogies," he says. "To see a sphere, for example, transformed into an orange, or a button into a letter, or a group of letters into a broad picture."

Also very interesting was his discussion of the color black, reclaiming it for new audiences and new purposes, and his thoughts on including a sense of humor or wit in your designs. His conclusion is where I really came to admire this book, though, as he relies on the words of one of his employers: "Good design at heart is simply honesty. It is an ingredient of character. Good design helps to form in any one part of the business an influence that affects all part of the business. It sustains character and honesty in every part of the business. Good design, therefore, is very good business indeed." It's a good thought to take away from this book, that a skilled designer's work is valued by those he or she works for, and a reminder of the burden that designers bear in their work.

Reading Rand's "A Designer's Art" was something like the experience I had when reading Stephen King's "On Writing." Both men are (or were, in Rand's case) masters of their respective craft, and both have had their effect on our culture and our way of life, each in their own unique way. More importantly, though, just as I was inspired to write as I was reading "On Writing," so too was I inspired to make something new and original as I put down "A Designer's Art." Both books inspired me to create. I can't think of any better motivation for reading them than that.

This Book: Designer's Delight
By Michael Pinto
First off: Rand is one of the best graphic designers of all time. He designed some of the best logos of the 20th century (example: the IBM logo), and this book features some of his best work. Rand doesn't take himself too seriously, and this book has a touch of humor here and there. His genius is that he can pull off a liquor ad, kids book or corporate showcase. My favorite thing about the work is that it doesn't look dated, there is a timeless classic quality here. Rand designed this book himself and the quality shows, this book is a must for anyone who is a professional graphic designer. Sadly Mr. Rand is no longer with us, but we have his treasures in this book.

Magnifico, City of Malls
By Zack Davisson
"Ruby 3, Part One: The Invisible World" is an eclectic mix of pulp adventures, spirituality, anti-consumerism, puns, politics and pretty much everything else that can possibly be crammed in. A full-cast audio production, this is the third adventure in the ZBS Foundation's award-winning series Ruby: The Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe.

"Ruby 3" brings back all of the favorite characters from the previous adventures. Many people were disappointed with the mish-mash of storylines and the new actress that was Ruby 2, so series-author Meatball Fulton made sure to hit a homerun with this follow-up. The rat-faced and scheming Rodant Kapoor, the lonely techie And/Or, the android obsessed archeologist TJ Teru (played by Bill Raymond, better known as "The Greek" on The Wire), the speak-song singing Android Sisters, and of course the Galactic Gumshoe (a good one) herself, Ruby, all return for this exciting adventure.

The story begins when the group-mind Auroreans hire Ruby to investigate an evil force disrupting their pure aesthetics. They believe the force emanates from Magnifico, the City of Malls, where it clouds people's minds into buying things they don't need. During her search, Ruby meets Inanna, who wears the symbol of the Seven Gates of the Society of Malls. Inanna is destined to play an important roll in the story, as she is forced to confront each of the seven gates, while being attacked by a mysterious woman named Erishkigal, Queen of Darkness, and her shape-shifting minion Inky.

Ruby's search leads her far and wide, including the inflatable retreat of Father Mojo and his disciples. Father Mojo is able to put a name to the evil force, Zumzammin, the two-faced God, and puts Ruby, who has the ability to slow time but not stop it, on the path of searching for the Time Suspenders, who can stop time by pure will. Meanwhile, Ruby and Rodant Kapoor find themselves mixed up a turf war between the Scuzzies and the Concerto Grosso, both vying for control of Magnifico.

That is just some of what is packed inside this amazing adventure. Aside from the over-arching story, there are several vignettes, like the introduction of Rodant Kapoors wife and son, or TJ Teru's quest for the ultimate game of enlightenment left behind by the ancient Nulians. I really enjoyed how "Ruby 3" ties in with the ZBS Foundation's other popular series, Jack Flanders, with the inclusion of Dave Adam's character of Mojo Sam.

There are some great new characters as well, especially the Inky whose mischievous little giggle belies the acts he is capable of. There is a nice balance between serious/silly as well, with the Inanna/Erishkigal story being a dark struggle interspersed with the comic adventures of Rodant Kapoor and his question to be "somebody doing something."

The series is a true epic, spanning 10 CDs in total with almost an hour on each CD. Unlike previous "Ruby" adventures, where the story is chunked into 5-minute episodes, each episode of "Ruby 3" runs around 30 minutes. Split into two parts, each having 5 CDs in the collection, the second part of the series Ruby 3, Part 2: The Invisible World is sold separately.

Ruby reaches new heights
By Richard Ferrie
Ruby reached a wonderful blend of action, philosophy, satire, exoticism, slap-stick and happy Dada madness in this third series. The Android Sisters get maximum play, the secrets of the universe are revealed, and craziest of all you can listen to this with the kids and they'll get into it. Something for everybody--kind of like life.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this selection!
It is an AUDIBLE Flight of Fantasy!

First prize award-winner for Women's Issues in the "Next Generation Indy Book Awards." Is it ADD or is it AGE? It might be both, as the author discovered when she was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder at age 45. "Confessions of an ADDiva" traces her journey from denial ("Does this mean I have 'dain bramage?'") to acceptance ("I've stopped apologizing to doorknobs."). Written with a good twist of humor and a tender dose of poignancy, "Confessions" shines a light on women whose unrecognized ADD-ish symptoms have reached a crescendo at "that certain age." Brain fog, memory malfunction, running late to appointments, losing the car keys (and reading glasses) are only part of the fun of midlife ADD!

"Confessions" is formatted in ADD-friendly style with lots of white space, whimsical illustrations and short chapters (for midlife women who constantly read five books at a time but rarely finish any of them). Roggli's raw honesty and optimistic attitude will reassure ADD women at any age that the best is yet to come. As one reader put it: "I laughed, I cried and I learned."

From the Author
This book is so personal that I nearly decided not to publish it, but I was encouraged again and again by the women in my support group. "This needs to be out there," they said. So I gathered my courage and sent it to the publisher. Lo and behold, a few months later, it was honored by the New Generation Indy Book awards with first prize for women's issues. I went to the Plaza Hotel in NYC to collect my award and was delighted to be among such distinguished company.

The truth is, though, that the book is pretty simple. Many women and men with ADHD have trouble finishing books, or even reading anything longer than an article. I wanted to make sure women read all the way to "The End" so I deliberately wrote short paragraphs, short chapters and formatted the book with lots of white space and whimsical illustrations. It must have worked; I hear again and again from readers who say it is one of the few books they have read cover to cover.

Of course, as an ADHD woman, it was a challenge to finish writing the book in the first place! The epilogue details my journey through the writing, but the book also details another kind of journey - from denial to acceptance of my own ADHD. There are a lot of clinical books out there that talk about the bad news of ADHD. It was never my intention to sugarcoat ADHD, but a more forgiving, more positive approach seems to mitigate some of its eye-rolling mistakes.I am proud to present it to you, dear reader. Most of my reviews have been five stars - other, who read for high brow insight were disappointed. That's OK. As long as the right people get what they need from the book, it was worth the embarrassment.

About the Author
Linda Roggli (1952-) is a Midwest farmer's daughter who caught the writing bug in childhood. Although her early attempts at poetry were unfortunate, she managed to publish Durham Doorway to Discovery (1995); Angie's Choice (2005); and Confessions of an ADDiva: midlife in the non-linear lane(2011) in adulthood. She is a coach for ADHD women and maintains a lively blog (addiva.net) and is a regular contributor to ADDitude magazine. She writes in Durham, NC with her Shelties at her feet and her husband rubbing her shoulders (OK, it happened once...)!

A Winner!
By Mimi J
I'm not a reader, but this is one I could not put down. This book is a WINNER! Linda's extraordinary gift of communication through the written word touched the hidden corners of my ADD soul! She verbalized what I could not communicate. I needed to know I was not alone in this ADD journey as well as understand it. This book not only exceeded my expectations, but helped me to embrace this ADD soul of mine and use the positives from it in my everyday life. If you are ADD, you too will find yourself on many pages of this book. If you're not, I can't encourage you enough to read it to better understand those wonderful, spirited ADD people who have enriched your life.

Entertaining, thoughtful, frank, insightful
By Susan C. Williams
I put the book in my car thinking I'd read a chapter now and then when I was out for breakfast. Surprise! I couldn't put it down. It's a compelling narrative and enjoyable read. The layout and illustrations make it easy to read too, which is the intention of the author, who's learned a lot about things that either help or hurt those with ADD and those who love or work with them. I don't have ADD but know a number of adults who do; I'm buying them all a copy. This is extremely well-written, full of personal anecdotes that illustrate the points the author is making about living with ADD. She's frank and open about her own ups and downs through the years. But it's not just a self-absorbed personal "confession." She's put the science into lay terms, making it accessible for all of us. Best of all, the book is one of hope and encouragement, celebrating the good things that can come from having ADD, especially if it's recognized and properly managed. And if I were a physician or therapist, I would be recommending this book to all my patients.

Wonderful in every way!
By EE
This is one of the best books I've ever read, in any genre. It makes you laugh and cry and feel a wide range of emotions in between. Everyone will be able to identify with something, if not many things in this book. It's incredibly honest and inciteful into ADD/ADHD and human behavior in general. I love this book for many reasons -- the wisdom, emotion, honesty, humor AND it is beautifully written and illustrated. A real find!!!

Physics Problem Solving Secrets: 120 Must-Know Problems Solved Step-By-Step, by David J. Ulrich

How much is passing physics class worth to getting your degree? Suppose you could spend one night reading and afterward be able to solve any textbook physics problem. Imagine ... spend LESS time studying yet receive BETTER grades on your homework and exams.

Sounds too good to be true?

Well, it isn't if you have the right teaching method.

Think about it. Solving textbook problems is the most important skill you need to get through class. Everything in class centers on this. You can waste a LOT of time memorizing formulas and various problem solving "methods" without ever getting to that "Aha!" moment. Truthfully, solving textbook problems is the FIRST step in understanding physics, but most professors can't even teach that after a whole year!

Simply put, learning to solve these homework problems is the key to getting an A in class.

At last! The RIGHT way to learn physics is here.

Which of These Powerful Secrets Are You Looking For?

  • The most important rule for calculating the components of vectors.
  • How to get projectile problems right, every time.
  • Energy and entropy explained in a way anyone can understand.
  • When, where, and how to use trigonometry without losing your mind.
  • Step-by-step method to solve static rigid body problems.
  • Special relativity explained using the "twin paradox".
  • The single pivotal principle behind quantum mechanics.
  • Why quarks and electrons are the building blocks of the universe.
  • The relationship between electricity, magnetism, and light.

... plus lots more!

Included are 120 typical homework problems solved STEP-BY-STEP. There are no "details left to the reader" here. Each problem begins with an explanation of how and why a particular approach or equation is used, then each step is explained from beginning to end.

I love this subject. It's is my passion. And as with anything loved, I HATE to see or hear my subject butchered by the average high-school and college "systems". This subject ought to be FUN! Unfortunately, you can't see than until you can SOLVE THE PROBLEMS.

Have you ever wondered why geniuses like Einstein or Feynman ENJOYED physics? I want to help you with the first step in understanding (problem solving), so you can get a glimmer of why. That's my primary motive.

But there is another. I don't want physics to get in your way. If you just want a way through the college "system", I think that's okay. Really. Not everyone needs to be a rocket scientist. In fact, that's kind of silly when you think about it. I just want to help.

It's easy to get started right away.

Get ready to enjoy more free time and still ACE that physics class!

Be careful!!
By DDMMDDMM
I just received this book. I hoped to be able to recommend it to some of my students who are having trouble with problem-solving. Having spend some time reading it, there are a couple of reasons I cannot recommend it to my students:
(1) The author uses non-standard words to describe problems: example: in the Atwood Machine example on page 35, the question is stated as "At what rate does the 10 kilogram mass fall?" What he means is, "What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the 10 kilogram mass?" Many of my students would confuse the author's statement to mean something about speed.
(2) Physics problem answers require UNITS! Many of the solutions do not indicate ANY units.

Excellent reading!
By Hanlie Slabbert
I am not an expert in Second World War history or Adolf Hitler but enjoyed this book very much. Many books of this nature usually leave me with hundreds of questions – not this book. Laurence Rees wrote it in such a way that I feel I have gained an excellent general understanding of the mindset and thinking of the era in Germany. I could not put it down. I now feel that I understand Adolf Hitler, his evil nature and the Second World War much better.

I bought this book after excellent reviews from other users
By lachistera
I bought this book after excellent reviews from other users, and have seen several videos of Laurence Rees conference in Youtube.
Indeed, I wanted that: the side of Hitler's charisma, and how many people dragged.
None of that: the book is a simple (very simple) biography of Hitler, with traces of charisma, which yes, the word is constantly repeated.
As a biography, it is very shallow (the Kershaw, Bullock, etc. are thousand times better), and the charismatic aspect is very diluted.
For example: not a word, not even once, about Eva Braun. Not a mention of Hitler's Youth. Nothing about the thousands of women who were "seduced" by Hitler. And the testimony of men, very few compared with the millions of soldiers who went to war joyfully.
Absolutely nothing of the theatrical preparation of Hitler, how studying his speeches, the reactions of the audience, how was late specifically to generate buzz, mass psychology ..: That was what interested me, and this book promised: talking about the mechanisms that were used to convince, seduce, drag the Germans. And about that, absolutely nothing.
Very, very disappointing.

not what it looks like
By reviews again
Well short of expectations. Writing is boring and predictable to begin with, then he's trying to prove Hitler's charisma, by endlessly repeating the word over and over, often several times on a single page, it gets old quick and never goes away. Then he has trouble with thought organization often seesawing back and forth chronologically i.e. he (author that is) invades Poland in 1939 only to jump right back into 1938 and soon skipping the year only reporting the month of an event so reader looses track of what he's in. Too bad as factually it seems in order, but presentation too often is a mess. Gets 3 stars for effort and seemingly thorough historical research, but if he's the Sunday Times' bestselling author, then I don't know who is not.
-----------------
Having finished the book, I have downgraded it to 2 stars. Overuse of the "charisma" phrase i simply appaling, as it became the SOLE reason for everything that happend during the rise and fall of the Third Reich, according to the author of course. Hitler's charisma was his biggest friend and enemy, all around him made both, right and wrong decissions because of his "charisma" and this goes on and on. On top of that, writing style leaves o lot to be desired hence, this is just an average book by an average author. I'll leave his factual findings unchallenged as I cannot confirm or deny their relevance or correctness.

Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century, by Sam Kashner, Nancy Schoenberger

From veteran entertainment reporter Sam Kashner and biographer Nancy Schoenberger comes the definitive account of the greatest Hollywood love story ever told—the romance of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Kashner has interviewed Elizabeth Taylor numerous times and is the only journalist given access to her extensive collection of personal letters and journals, and he and Schoenberger have also interviewed the Burton family at length, including Burton’s actress daughter Kate. This is truly an authorized and singularly informed biography of these two larger-than-life stars, and of their glamorous, volatile, and audacious relationship.

From Publishers Weekly
Life outdoes movie melodrama in this raucous, intimate, dual biography of Hollywood's ultimate It Couple. As told by journalist Kashner (Sinatraland) and biographer Schoenberger (Dangerous Muse: The Life of Caroline Blackwood), the romance between the glittering Tinseltown diva and the sonorous, self-loathing Shakespearean reprises their co-starring movie roles: it has the passion of Cleopatra (the Vatican condemned their on-set adultery as erotic vagrancy), the riotous merriment of The Taming of the Shrew, the poisonous marital fights of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and a cast of thousands of paparazzi and shrieking fans. The well-researched narrative—the authors make good use of Burton's engaging love letters and diary entries—offers juicy details of his epic alcoholism and her towering tantrums, and is fascinated with the jewelry pieces, like the Taj Mahal diamond that Taylor famously extracted from Burton as tribute or penance. But from the binges and bling emerges a revealing portrait of the magnetic qualities—her vulgar warmth, his soulful virility—that glued the couple together. Here is that rare love story that holds one's interest beyond the wedding—and a reminder, after the thin gruel of Brangelina, of what a feast celebrity can be. Photos. (June 1)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Offering up "Brangelina" as the 21st century's lackluster answer to "Liz and Dick," critics likened the contemporary pair to I Love Lucy's Fred and Ethel Mertz. Those unfamiliar with "the brawling Burtons" will find juicy anecdotes in abundance here, but Furious Love rises above mere celebrity gossip by humanizing the mythic couple, taking readers deep into their A-list world of conspicuous consumption and private pain. Despite some repetitive, clich-ridden prose, reviewers were still captivated by this powerful portrait of doomed love. Less successful, they noted, were the authors' attempts to connect Hollywood's emerging celebrity culture to the relationship, ceaselessly scrutinized by the tabloids. An "addictive page-turner" (Providence Journal), Furious Love is a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the most tempestuous romances of the 20th century.

From Booklist
In this dual biography of the two legendary film stars, the authors draw upon new information, including interviews with Elizabeth Taylor and with the Burton family, to capture the famously passionate and tumultuous relationship between the legendary couple. Already well known for her multiple marriages when she met him, Elizabeth Taylor added fuel to the flame of her own celebrity in 1964 by embarking on an affair with her married Cleopatra leading man, Richard Burton. The two became inseparable, and their personal charisma, scandalous love affair, and tempestuous relationship captured the attention of the press and the public worldwide, giving rise to the paparazzi phenomenon. It's a mesmerizing tale, but it's also sad, and sometimes ugly, as the two stars engaged in vicious fights, nursed their jealousies and insecurities, and descended into alcoholism while outwardly living a life of glamour and sophistication. --Kathleen Hughes

The Love of a Lifetime
By Amy Leemon
Written with the cooperation of Elizabeth Taylor, who gave the authors 40 letters written by Richard Burton to her - including one she received a few days after his death - and his widow who gave them his diaries, this is probably the most realistic account of this couple that we are going to get. Elizabeth Taylor told the authors "I don't care what you write about me - as long as you honor Richard". Richard Burton does seem to be the most sympathetic character in this book.

After they met on the set of Cleopatra and fell in love, their lives were never the same. They sincerely loved each other but in the end, one of them was more destructive than good to the relationship. I ended feeling sorry for Richard Burton and thinking he would have been much happier wearing an old sweater and teaching at some university.

I'm glad I read the book. I now have a whole different view of an actor I've enjoyed for years.

A Guilty Pleasure
By debra crosby
I grew up with a mother who was an avid film fan, and read Photoplay and Modern Screen magazines, enjoying the pictures alone until I was old enough to read the stories. I lived through the years of Le Scandale, as Richard Burton described his headline-grabbing affair with Elizabeth Taylor. My mother was horrified by their daring and, to many, immoral, hedonistic behavior and was appalled to read a quote by Ms. Taylor, asking "What are they saying about us now?" during the thick of things. However, I, as a young girl, couldn't get enough of the news of these two larger than life stars. I later grew into a movie fan myself and was constantly amazed by the talent that these two people possessed, as well as their propensiy for excess.

I therefore could not resist purchasing "Furious Love" and devouring it with a great deal of guilty pleasure. It is a book that is obviously sympathetic to Richard and Elizabeth, as they preferred to be called, and referred to themselves. They apparently hated "Liz & Dick," as they were called in the press, but seemed to understand that, under those names, they were a product and were also news. I enjoyed coming to see these two people as human beings, with all their faults.

It is the story of Burton, a frustrated writer and magnificent stage actor who made the uncomfortable transition to movies, where he guiltily enjoyed the money and fame that move brought him, and his insatiable love for Taylor, which he could not quench in spite of the guilt that also produced in him. He left his wife and children, caught up in a grand passion for the woman he was never able to forget.

Taylor and Burton lived life to its gaudy fullest, drinking and brawling their way around the world. Over time, their lifestyle took its toll on both of them, and ultimately led to the demise of their marriage (twice).

I have always admired Ms. Taylor's mental toughness and seeming ability to deal with whatever life deals her. Apparently, she granted unprecedented access to herself and to her correspondence, for information regarding her tempestuous relationship with Burton. This book also had the cooperation of Sally Hay Burton, Burton's widow, as well as personal friends and professionals who worked with them. As such, it is a very revealing piece of work.

I would have liked for photos referred to in the text to have been included in the book. However, the photos that were provided are interesting.

Fortunately for the purposes of this book, Richard Burton was an avid journal-keeper and correspondent, frequently writing love notes and letters to Elizabeth Taylor even when she was in the next room. And the fact that his last letter was written to her on the day before he died is an incredible bit of irony and romance. It is the one letter that Taylor did not allow the authors to quote directly.

This is a sad story of two people who loved each other, but whose relationship was destroyed by a combination of excess (alcohol, spending/consumption, jealousy) and dark passion. But they loved each other nonetheless. In this book, Elizabeth and Richard are seen at their best and their worst. The waste of potential and talent and the subsequent losses they both sustained are truly tragic. But it is also the story of a love that was bigger than two of the biggest stars the movies have ever seen.

If you love reading about Liz and Dick, check out this story about Elizabeth and Richard. I can't imagine that anyone who is interested in these two wouldn't find something new here.

In short, I ate it up. I admit it. There, I said it.

The roles of their lifetimes
By Jay Dickson
The scandal in the 1960s of the love affair and then marriage of Elizabeth Taylor, then the world's most famous movie star, and the great Welsh leading man Richard Burton, may have been the biggest celebrity story of the 20th century that didn't involve murder. The word "paparazzo" to mean a celebrity photographer was even coined in LA DOLCE VITA to describe the kinds of press agents Federico Fellini observed congregating around the two stars during their courtship in Rome on the set of CLEOPATRA, and for the next fifteen years their relationship was inescapably in the public eye, often crowding off the front page the great political events of the period. This new account of this relationship--in many ways a biography of both stars--is supplied by unprecedented access to Burton's diaries and private writings, and by the express consent of Ms. Taylor herself and also Burton's widow Sally; this is probably as close to the full story as we'll ever get to this famous marriage until after Elizabeth Taylor's death.

Even so, she seems to have allowed Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger pretty full much full rein in writing whatever they wanted about her and Burton, and though the authors seem (justifiably) taken with the Burtons' prodigious talents and their charisma, they also do not stint in describing their selfishness, excess, and even at times their cruelty towards one another and (particularly in Richard Burton's case) towards others outside their circle. Burton and Taylor took great pleasure on as living as largely as they could, and their incredible profligate spending, drinking, eating, and sex was not only reported constantly but was very much the basis for their relationship: they both loved such glamorous excessive gestures. (It was what she was very much accustomed to her entire life, and he reveled in this given how deprived he had felt growing up poor in the Welsh coal district.) Yet this took its toll on their health, and on the lives of their children and former partners, and their love of fighting often prompted them to be quite vicious to one another. His propensity for being unkind when drunk led him at times to lash out not just at her but at others in their line of sight, and one of the book's most upsetting accounts is his vicious excoriation of his three mentors--Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, and Ralph Richardson--at a banquet in the Seventies (and we also read his regret expressed the next day in his diary when he's sober).

The book has a strong narrative drive, although it begins perhaps too rushed: we start right off with their first meeting, and are not given as strong a sense of her remarkable film career before CLEOPATRA (culminating in her fine performances with Montgomery Clift in the late 50s, and her winning the Oscar for her histrionic BUTTERFIELD 8 mostly through sympathy for her famous nearly-fatal health crisis) as we might have been. The account also suffers from the eventually wearying details of their excesses (Burton, apparently, was always frightened he would be a boring person without them and without his beautiful voice), and from the writers' often too-florid style, which suffers from an overreliance on cliche: for example, Taylor, we are told, "was born to rule, but she wanted a man's man, and in Mike Todd, she finally got one". But the account is redeemed by the writers' intelligent awareness of both how their talents blossomed in the early years of their courtship--they gave one another confidence, leading them to give their greatest performances ever in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, and for her to try acting on the stage--, and also of their intense likability. Her constant humorously self-deprecating awareness of herself as essentially a vulgar "broad" has always made it practically impossible to dislike her, and Kashner and Schoenberger are quite good at detailing his great sensitivity and wish to be a better person, which in many ways always redeemed him. These were two actors who found their most exciting roles married to one another and in the public eye, even if these roles as "Liz and Dick" ultimately could not be sustained forever.
