Wonderful insight into Hermes

I absolutely love this book. It is written in the translated form in one column of the page, and paraphrased in the other column. Some of the most interesting and sacred information about the life of Hermes and the restoration and rejuvination of his body every 100 years by the flower of life. Incredible. Makes Egyptian beliefs understandable.

A very well-cast biography of a true American hero.

It was a great thrill reading about the life of Charles Lindbergh after hearing a lot about home from my parents as I was growing up. They were married a day or two after the famous flight in 1927, making the lore of the Lindbergh story all the more important to them. He was a true hero of their generation, making his importance all the more poignant. The subplot about the kidnapping of the Lindbergh's first son was disappointingly lightly treated in the book even though it struck a great resonance from Lindy's contemporaries.
The true intense importance of Lindbergh's achievement lies in the inspiration of our nation to become a leader in the commercial use of aircraft. The importance of his flight to Paris could have been a one-off event if Lindbergh did not use it to make the world realize the importance of developing long distance flights for transportation of goods and people more efficiently. The fact that he personally developed flight maps for so many routes in the US and then in Central and South America made his achievement even greater.
The latter part of the book deals with the later stages of his life when he became involved with a famous scientist, studied mysticism and then became a suporter of the Nazis. His achievements in air were truly groundbreaking. The latter parts of his life were a I great disappointment to his fan base.

He did it alone

The flight of the century, I thought was a story of Capt. Lindberg (as a civilian ex mail pilot) crossing the Atlantic Ocean. What a surprise to get one or the best book I have ever read about the entire life of Lindberg and his family. As a pilot of over 32 years of flying I thought I knew quite a lot about Lindberg. I did not know very much until I read this book to the end. Once again thank you amazon for selling such quality books.
I felt the trip from New York to Paris France was great and I felt I was right with him. The weather he went through reminded me of getting caught myself in similar conditions, no fun but it happens to all who can count their flying hours by the thousands. His flight in a single engine unproved airplane, next to no instruments to speak of (as we had later) was the test of a real pilot. What impressed me was all he accomplished in his life aside from aviation. He left a lot of things for us. One thing I would like to say about his flight to Paris, I always felt their was something helping me when I needed help, I'll leave it their but his help in WW II was of very much. One thing he helped a lot of P-38 pilots was how to get the best fuel consummation by setting the throttle and presser setting different. That alone brought pilots home instead of crashing. I could go on for ever but you will have to read the book, his life was something people should know about. So much he left us and so little credit given him.

Flight Of The Century

I found it difficult to put this book down. Thomas Kessner truly gave me a greater appreciation for the Lindbergh flight. But the book is about more than solo flight across the Atlantic. In this book we learn about his parents and grandparents, his upbringing and rather fragmented education. Lindbergh's fascination with mechanical things is brought to light, and his penchant for detail. These were to contribute to the ultimate success of his flight. I have often wondered why we has successful at all considering the Spirit Of St. Louis was built for less than $15,000, while his competition had nearly ten times as much capitol and all of the current experts on flight. This book answers those questions.

A fresh superhero story, a healthy dose of mythology, and a splash of Lovecraftian wonder

Another installment in the Grapple Gun books, and this one is truly a home run. While all the Grapple Gun books have been a highly enjoyable mix of pulpy adventure, rich characterization, and well-edited writing, this installment eliminates the minor complaints I had with two of the previous books.

Whereas one or two of the Archers books felt a bit condensed, Eye of Horus feels rich and deep. It's not a huge book by any means, but it feels exactly as long as it has to be. After the final page, I definitely wanted to read more about Rohlin and Feehan's characters, but I didn't feel like there were any loose threads left over or that anything was rushed.

Rohlin's descriptions in this book are at once clear and beautiful, allowing you to easily imagine the often other-worldly surroundings without resorting to superfluous description. He gives you just enough. As for describing events, thoughts, and actions, Rohlin's writing has a definite rhythm to it, delivering satisfying clinchers and witty dialogue. It is the perfect blend of high culture mythology and pop culture superheroes and adventure.

And speaking of other-worldly, this book really dives into the mythos of what makes the Grapple Gun Universe tick. It doesn't go so heavy into the mythology that you feel drowned the way some fantasies leave you feeling -- instead, it frames everything neatly within the adventure and what is happening to the characters now. It's really well done, and I imagine it stands well on its own for readers new to the universe. I actually wish I had read this before I read Ronin, as understanding some of the characters in this book really helps flesh out what is going on in Ronin. The only downside to reading this book first.. and it is a minor downside... is that a new reader's heart won't skip a beat with the knowledge that "it just got real" the moment John Law makes an appearance. But they'll get to experience that in other books.

Finally, I'll speak (spoiler-free, of course) on the ending. While one of the previous books struck me as having a predictable ending in that it felt too much like a good but typical superhero movie ending, the ending of Guardians is extremely satisfying and restores my faith in future installments. The ending of Guardians is also predictable, not because it's blase or too easy, but it feels a bit like a mystery. Through careful foreshadowing and storytelling, you'll wind up with your own predictions for what will happen at the end, which I appreciated. And despite that, I still got a curveball or two by the time I closed the book. As a matter of fact, the only complaint I can think of for this book is that I wish a bit more time was spent focused on Leaf at the very end, but it was not so lacking that I felt jilted as a reader.

Overall, Grapple Gunners hungry for another installment will not be disappointed by this book, and unfamiliar readers looking for a fresh superhero story with a healthy dose of mythology and a splash of Lovecraftian or Chambers-esque wonder are in for a treat.

A Perfect, Massive Starting Point

If you are already familiar with the books of the "Grapple Gun Universe", this latest installment will feel both familiar and fresh. If this is your first visit to GGU, strap in for a great read.

What Rohlin and Feehan have done so brilliantly with 'Eye of Horus' is to take everything which readers already know about the GGU (if I may) and blown it up in terms of size and scope. At the same time, they have managed to package the narrative in such a way that any new reader shouldn't feel in any way 'lost' or at a disadvantage by not having read the previous books. Rather, any hints to other characters and events should only serve to whet the appetite to delve deeper into the other books.

In 'Eye of Horus', we primarily follow Marcus North, aka 'Victory' as he discovers the secrets of an ancient artefact left behind by his late father. The Eye of Horus, an amulet ancient beyond guessing, which confers to its bearer immense power. Naturally, then, are those who wish to have the amulet for themselves, and not necessarily with the betterment of all mankind in their plans.

Along the way we are given glimpses into just how large the GGU may be in ways both subtle and sublime. Subtle, such as hints and brief mentions of past events and characters which have had a profound impact on the shaping of the current world; sublime, such as Marcus being torn away from the world he knows to places immeasurably distant and thrown to his knees before the feet villains that would not look out of place alongside DC's Darkseid or Marvel's Thanos.
Here is a force to be reckoned with, and we are left wondering who can possibly stand against him?

Fast, sharp, and a worthy cornerstone of the larger GGU.

A Diving-board Into the GGU.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know the gentlemen from Grapple Gun Publishing this year, as well as having them as players in a number of my games. So when I was asked to be a beta reader, to see how Guardians: The Eye of Horus would serve as an introduction to the Grapple Gun Universe, I jumped on the opportunity. I love superhero stories, and their world intrigued me. Turns out, Guardians was a perfect introduction.

Guardians: The Eye of Horus is a self-contained story which feels like it is part of the larger narrative of the GGU. I was drawn in to the world, but was not spoon fed details through lengthy ‘idiot-proof’ plot exposition. The GGU is hinted at, casts long shadows over the characters, and looms in the background of the story. Guardians left me with the desire to pick up the other four GGU books (which I am patiently waiting for dead tree versions of), and to run a game of Cypher set in its world.

"We shall never be alone again like this"

Edith Wharton filled her novels with a feeling of ruin, passion and restriction. People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well.

But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.

It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.

Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife.

But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.

Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.

Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.

Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic.

If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew.

"Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

A 'Classic' or not?...................

It is an interesting thought process when you examine why some novels are rated as 'Classic' while others of the same time period are not. The author, Edith Wharton, does succeed in two separate areas. Her writing abilities are quite good and she was able to define scenes, events and characters in a highly defined and pleasant manner. Also, her characters are well defined and literally jump off the page into the reader's mindset/ The plot and action of the tale, however, wane quite literally. No, we do not live in a world of rainbows and fairies but neither do we live in the tragic world that our hero, Ethan, is forced to deal with. Equally absurd is the fact that Ethan, to the end, did nothing to revolt against the factors that oppressed him. Lastly, I am not sure if the attempted suicides were meant to continue casting gloom upon Ethan's fate or that this was a religious lesson by the author of how self-destruction is a sin and forbidden by the period in which Ethan lives.

In sum, this novel can be viewed favorably for its writing style does not serve as a model from which we can personally grow......

I'm not commenting on the novel itself, but on the printing. In a word, awful. The author's name is spelled 'Edit Warton' on the first page! The type is minuscule. It looks, literally, like it was downloaded from a public domain site and printed without further editing. There's no intorduction, no background on the author.

If you want to read this book, buy a different edition.

The most valuable book on your shelf!

I had the first edition of The Southern Living Gardening Book and wore it out over the years. Recently, I purchased the new one, and it's even better! If you garden in the south, you must have this book! The way the book divides the south into zones takes the guess work out of buying plants. If the doesn't say a plant will grow in your zone, don't waste your money. It simply will not. The information for each plant is excellent. And the list is exhuastive. It's the rare plant that isn't listed, and if it's not, it means one of two things: either the plant is so new it wasn't included in the book or it simply won't grow anywhere in the south.

I am a garden designer, and I find the plant lists in the book invaluable. Need evergreens? Need blooming shrubs? Need flowers? Go to the lists and pick and choose according to your needs. For the most part, the plants in the lists will be readily available at your local garden center.

Are you browsing garden catalogs? How many times have you ordered and planted new things just to have them die, making you feel like a failure? Before you spend your money on a new, exotic looking plant, check the SLGB. It will tell you where to plant, how to plant, and whether it will thrive in your garden. Big confidence builder!

Whether you are a beginning gardener or have gardened for decades, you need this book! If I could only have one, this would be it!

Wish I'd bought the hardback edition!

We bought our first home this summer and knew we had to make big changes to the small backyard but had no idea where to begin. This was the first gardening book I bought, and I might never have to buy another! The lists of plants for various conditions is extremely helpful. The plant descriptions are thorough but easy for a beginner like me to understand. And the other gardening procedures and tips, from how to prune a shrub to how to get rid of pests and diseases are equally as readable and useful. A must-have for any Southern gardener!

great book! great references !

At first, i've just planned to use this book only for my presentation and would sell it later but after i've got it, i've totally changed my mind.

Tons of Thompson's great works with the explanation how great they are which help you more understand his style.

i have to admit that you can find some contents and also images on the internet [i think the internet sources just took some contents from the book for showing or analyzing Thompson's style]

Anyway, this book still provides much more deeper details which are incredibly amazing to collect!

One man's love of letters

I wasn't aware of this stunning book until I saw it featured in a title I reviewed recently: Bibliographics: 100 Classic Graphic Design Books. It reproduced five spreads from the book and I knew I had to have a copy. Though published in 1988 copies are available but a rather pricey, the pre-used copy I bought was in perfect condition, fortunately.

I was aware of Thompson's work for Westvaco Inspirations but didn't know he designed sixty issues over twenty-four years and rather amazingly he was asked to take over the design when he was only twenty-seven. There are 160 glorious pages devoted to Inspirations with plenty of large reproductions of spreads and they clearly show Thompson's exuberance and joy for type, color and creative page design. It was interesting to see, that by 1942, he was using his trademark style of graphics and type printed in process colors. His Alphabet 26 gets a good showing with thirteen pages reproducing nine Inspiration spreads.

The remaining fifty odd pages in the book cover stamp design for USPS, magazine covers, a long section on book design especially Westvaco's yearly Christmas keepsakes which Thompson designed for twenty-five years. One of which was the now famous 'Red Badge of Courage' from 1968 with a hole punched through the pages to simulated a bullet hole, inspired by stories of Civil War soldiers whose lives had been saved by a pack of cards or something else they had in their clothing. The last book featured is the Bible which Washburn College, Topeka, asked Thompson to design. The sample pages shown reveal a mastery of type design with ragged right text and perhaps more importantly setting the lines with natural breaks rather than the contrived line breaks that had been a traditional way of text setting in all previous Bibles. Thompson's 'Washburn Bible' was published in 1980 by Oxford Uni Press and can still be picked up cheaply. A remarkable publication.

'The Art of Graphic Design' is an amazing book which will intrigue any publication designer and others, it celebrates the life of a great creative mind and his timeless design work for the printed page.

More than a Biography...

This gorgeous memoir showcasing Bradbury Thompson's work for Westvaco Paper is, without doubt, one of the most prized books in my design library. It is beautifully crafted and printed and is a full-color, visually rich stroll through one of the most significant design careers of the 20th century. Reflections from several contributors guide readers through Thompson's experiences at Westvaco and reveal the imagination and intelligence of an unassuming genius. The text is a balanced accompaniment to his work and unpacks the philosophically and technically innovative processes Thompson used for producing exceptionally creative work in the post-war world of publishing. Thompson is not afraid to credit sentiment, collaborate with the other arts, or find inspiration in any source. Furthermore, his solutions are sensitive to the practical demands of life in the 40's and 50's. Deadlines, the value of humor, the importance of family, and the desire for experimentation are woven throughout the chapters and projects. The book is organized by projects and ranges from his Monalphabet, Alphabet 26, and designing the Washburn Bible to purely aesthetic concerns of creating motion with graphics and type. Students and designers who believe visually exciting, cutting-edge design is exclusive to their own immediate recollections of 20th century trends will be amazed to discover ideas, visual experimentation and originality over fifty years old. This is also print design pre-dtp and so the manipulations of type, image and color are absolute technical marvels. The resulting aesthetic is stronger than simply a cool retro "look" and for most designers will be simply ... inspirational.

A different take a stress

I picked up the book expecting to read "Stress is bad. Here's how to get rid of it." What I read is that some stress is good. If you're going into battle, stress can help you prepare properly. Good thinking, if you can keep it in perspective. The book actually deals with business issues, using the perspective of an Army ranger who has seen both the fighting side and the business side of life. Worthwhile reading.

A must read if you are in business in the new decade!!

The current economy is stressful. The world is stressful. If stress isn't managed, you won't be successful. Using techniques taught in the Army, Dale expertly shows us how to use those techniques to help us keep our focus and effectively manage life, business and family in today's times.

A book about leadership masquerading as one about stress

You probably should not leave critical thinking at the door when opening "Winning Under Fire" - or any other book, for that matter - and if you don't, you may, for example, catch the author making an error on his own military turf - when page 192 says "... Germany launched their 1939 offensive against Western Europe...", it gets the year wrong - or, less trivially, claim a contradiction between page 48's encouragement for managers to "positively" stress their subordinates with challenging deadlines, and page 26's identification of "unreasonable expectations for greater productivity" as one of the "negative" work-environment stressors.

Speaking of "positive" stress, likening a manager to a drill sergeant is a dodgy proposition: an employee's tenure with a company is not a novice-soldier's training, and the strategy of escalating demands is not going to work. This illustrates a broader point. An army unit is, after all, different from a business department. Where they are similar, stress-control wisdom is going to be coming from the business world to the military world, because of the civilian world's vast numerical superiority. Where they are dissimilar, the military experience is likely to be inapplicable to the business world.

Having looked at the army field manuals "Winning Under Fire" refers to when talking about stress - FM 6-22.5 and FM 22-51 - I am going to say that their advice is, as could be expected, "domain-specific" and not especially transferable. David Collie collects what he can from these two, and proceeds - boosting the page count - by making the connection from "stress" to "leadership", "processing" two more field manuals. I would estimate that only a third of the total page count actually deals with stress; furthermore, the perspective is of a supervisor, i.e. an officer or a manager.

This is not what I was expecting - I guess I was looking for meditation tips from Rambo? :) - so the book was not especially useful to me. However, I did find a number of interesting ideas and helpful checklists, and appreciated a competent and methodical narrative.
