Karpov's Strategic Wins: The Making Of A Champion 1961-1985 (Volume 1), by Tibor Karolyi

Anatoly Karpov is one of the chess world’s greatest World Champions, with his prime strength being his subtle maneuvering and positional play. Many of his opponents have been baffled by the profundity of his strategies, but here Karolyi explains Karpov’s genius.

This volume features Karpov’s most entertaining and instructive strategic wins from 1961-1985 as the Russian star proved he was a worthy successor to Bobby Fischer’s title. The book starts with Karpov as a precocious youngster and tells the story of the making of a champion.

I bought the chess book of the yr for under $20
By mojojojo50
Professional chess reviewers are calling this the book of the year. I agree! Karpov became 1974-1985 world champion, when Fischer walked away from a $5 million match offer. K was an active world champion, who played played in and won a couple dozen super-tournaments & 7/9 world title matches. In their 5 matches(146 games) Kasparov finished with only +2. This immense book features 76 deeply annotated games (notes for some games run 10-15 pages, lots of diagrams, deep analysis). Chapters are by year, starting with K at 11 yrs old, with 18 junior level games before K enters GM level competitions. Most games have introductory comments,(including K's won-loss record vs each opponent). Tournament results are given in the text(I would have liked an appendix listing for results & also for openings-- though there is appendix of strategic themes). Karolyi stays with his task to describe how the greatest positional player developed his game(a few draws and lucky escapes are even included). Karpov's was known for his efficient, positional squeeze and yet he can also aggressively get in the face of opponents. The English prose is reliable, the notes seem to be error-free, (except the odd date mistake). Production values are excellent, the book lays flat when I study the games, has a sturdy binding. For the current price this is a steal!!

This book is a nice complement to other Karpov collections(Mednis,Karpov,Kasparov), with only a few duplicated games. Many famous Karpov wins do not appear in this book. Karolyi selected games based on "instructive and artistic value" & credits other analysts throughout his book. For Karpov's personal history & background stories - read Kasparov & Seirawan. Karolyi is well-known for coaching the Polgars & Leko. I suspect many of these games have been used as student exercises, which explains Karolyi's explanatory writing style. This is a book for long-term studying; as many of Karpov's seemingly simple moves and re-grouping strategies are understandable only under repeated examination.

Great new chess books!
By Lawrence S. Tamarkin
The last really great book to explain Karpov's way of playing was, "How Karpov Wins", by Grandmaster Edmar Mednis, (1975/1994). GM Mednis has passed away but this book lives on as possibly his most educational. Now comes along Two new books on Karpov's Play, "Karpovs Strategic Wins 1 - 1961-1985", 458 p.p. Quality Chess (2011). & "Karpov's Strategic Wins 2 - 1986-2010, 576 (!) p.p. Quality Chess (2011). Like the Mednis book, these two volumes by the very experienced International Master, Tibor Krolyi (Who also wrote two fantastic volumes on Gary Kasparov, and another good book about Judit Polgar, among others), was well worth waiting for - Superbly indexed, with detailed indexes, and many statistics (Including how Karpov's opponent's did against other world champions), is included in the two volumes. Of course the most important thing is how well the games are annotated & explained - Here again I was thrilled to see a fine blend of deep analysis (where necessary), and verbal explanation that rival's Mednis' earlier work. If you are a chess player with an understanding of the game between experienced beginner, and advanced amateur, and you desire to become a master-level player, then you cannot make a better choice then these two volumes - And even if you don't progress much in your chess ability from reading them, you will come away with hundreds of hours of enjoyment and learning about the play of one of the 3 greatest World Champions since 1972.

Destined to Become a Classic
By R. Tobias
Anatoly Karpov's games are legendary among chess enthusiasts. Some GM's have even acknowledged that their path to the GM title involved a long and intensive study of Karpov's play. Were it not for one Garry Kasparov, Karpov would have likely held the title of World Champion for 20 years, so strong was his play for so long. This 2 volume work may well be the best extant work on Karpov's games, with competition only from Karpov's own "My Best Games", which includes 100 games. This volume alone has 76 Karpov games, and several dozen other games as a bonus. This work, as the title implies, focuses only on Karpov's strategic wins. While Anatoly could play great attacking games on occasion, his real claim to fame is as a strategic genius, and it is his strategic play that gets center attention here. Karpov was known for his ability to slowly and surely squeeze his opponent like a python, often placing most of his pieces on his own first rank, where their influence still strangled the opponent's postion. The notes to the games show that this work is a real labor of love. Karolyi gives clear, well thought out explanations of the play. Analysis of variations is in plenty of depth, but the real shining feature is the rich, plentiful explanations in WORDS of what is going on. There is a tremendously rich education in positional/strategic play to be found here. Here is just one of hundreds of such notes, taken from Karpov-Unzicker, 1974 Olympiad: (after 35.Bh5!) "Completing the manoeurvre. In this particular case the side w/ extra space is happy to exchage a pair of pieces, considering that we are talking about Black's best defensive piece. The text move illustrates another important principle: in positions w/ a space advantage , one of the most effective strategies is to attack on both flanks. The defending side may be able to protect one weakness, but the difficulties associated w/ transferring defensive pieces from one side to the other will often prove insurmountable." It is not often that I have seen so much distilled chess wisdom in a games collection. In addition to the pleasure of playing over the games of one of the all-time greats, you will be slowly but surely increasing your strategic understanding, and hence your results, as you play through these masterpieces. Highly recommended.

Mankind, under the grace of God, hungers for spiritual peace, esthetic achievements, family security, justice, and liberty, none directly satisfied by industrial productivity. But productivity allows the sharing of the plentiful rather than fighting over scarcity; it provides time for spiritual, esthetic, and family matters. It allows society to delegate special skills to institutions of religion, justice, and the preservation of liberty.
--Harlan Mills, DPMA and Human Productivity

As computer professionals, we strive to build systems that work and are useful; as software engineers, we are faced with the task of creating complex systems in the presence of constrained computing and human resources. Object-oriented (OO) technology has evolved as a means of managing the complexity inherent in many different kinds of systems. The object model has proven to be a very powerful and unifying concept.

Changes to the Second Edition

Since the publication of the second edition of Object-Oriented Analysis andDesign with Applications, we have seen major technological advances. This listincludes some highlights, among many others.

  • High-bandwidth, wireless connectivity to the Internet is widely available.
  • Nanotechnology has emerged and has started to provide valuable products.
  • Our robots are cruising the surface of Mars.
  • Computer-generated special effects have enabled the film industry to recreate any world imaginable with complete realism.
  • Personal hovercraft are available.
  • Mobile phones have become pervasive to the point of being disposable.
  • We have mapped the human genome.
  • Object-oriented technology has become well established in the mainstream of industrial-strength software development.

We have encountered the use of the object-oriented paradigm throughout the world. However, we still encounter many people who have not yet adopted the object paradigm of development. For both of these groups, this revision of this book holds much value.

For the person new to object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD), this book gives the following information:

  • The conceptual underpinnings of and evolutionary perspective on object orientation
  • Examples of how OOAD can be applied across the system development lifecycle
  • An introduction to the standard notation used in system and software development, the Unified Modeling Language (UML 2.0)
  • For the experienced OOAD practitioner, the content herein provides value from a different perspective.
  • UML 2.0 is still new to even experienced practitioners. Here you will see the key changes in the notation.
  • More focus on modeling is provided, per feedback received about the previous edition.
  • You can gain a great appreciation for "why things are the way they are" in the object-oriented world, from the Concepts section of the book. Many people may never have been exposed to this information on the evolution of the OO concepts themselves. Even if you have been, you may not have grasped its significance when you were first learning the OO paradigm.

There are four major differences between this edition and the previous publication.

  • UML 2.0 has been officially approved. Chapter 5, Notation, will introduce UML 2.0. To enhance the reader's understanding of this notation, we explicitly distinguish between its fundamental and advanced elements.
  • This edition introduces some new domains and contexts in the Applications chapters. For example, the application domains range broadly across various levels of abstraction from high-level systems architecture to the design details of a Web-based system.
  • When the previous edition was published, C++ was relatively new, as was the very concept of OO programming. Readers tell us that this emphasis is no longer a primary concern. There is an abundance of OO programming and technique books and training available, not to mention additional programming languages designed for OO development. Therefore, most of the coding discussions have been removed.
  • Finally, in response to requests received from readers, this edition focuses much more on the modeling aspects of OOAD. The Applications section will show you how to use the UML, with each chapter emphasizing one phase of the overall development lifecycle.
  • Goals

This book provides practical guidance on the analysis and design of object-oriented systems. Its specific goals are the following:

    • To provide a sound understanding of the fundamental concepts and historical evolution of the object model
    • To facilitate a mastery of the notation and process of object-oriented analysis and design
    • To teach the realistic application of object-oriented analysis and design within a variety of problem domains The concepts presented all stand on a solid theoretical foundation, but this is primarily a pragmatic book that addresses the practical needs and concerns of software engineering practitioners, from the architect to the software developer.
    Audience

This book is written for the computer professional as well as for the student.

    • For the practicing systems and software developer, we show you how to effectively use object-oriented technology to solve real problems.
    • In your role as an analyst or architect, we offer you a path from requirements to implementation, using object-oriented analysis and design. We develop your ability to distinguish "good" object-oriented architectures from "bad" ones and to trade off alternate designs when the perversity of the real world intrudes. Perhaps most important, we offer you fresh approaches to reasoning about complex systems.
    • For the program manager, we provide insight on topics such as allocation of resources of a team of developers, software quality, metrics, and management of the risks associated with complex software systems.
    • For the student, we provide the instruction necessary for you to begin acquiring several important skills in the science and art of developing complex systems.

This book is also suitable for use in undergraduate and graduate courses as well as in professional seminars and individual study. Because it deals primarily with a method of software development, it is most appropriate for courses in software engineering and as a supplement to courses involving specific object-oriented programming languages.

    Structure

The book is divided into three major sections--Concepts, Method, and Applications--with considerable supplemental material woven throughout.

    Concepts

Section I examines the inherent complexity of software and the ways in which complexity manifests itself. We present the object model as a means of helping us manage this complexity. In detail, we examine the fundamental elements of the object model such as: abstraction, encapsulation, modularity, and hierarchy. We address basic questions such as "What is a class?" and "What is an object?"

Because the identification of meaningful classes and objects is the key task in object-oriented development, we spend considerable time studying the nature of classification. In particular, we examine approaches to classification in other disciplines, such as biology, linguistics, and psychology, and then apply these lessons to the problem of discovering classes and objects in software systems.

    Method

Section II presents a method for the development of complex systems based on the object model. We first present a graphic notation (i.e., the UML) for object-oriented analysis and design, followed by a generic process framework. We also examine the pragmatics of object-oriented development--in particular, its place in the software development lifecycle and its implications for project management.

    Applications

Section III offers a collection of five nontrivial examples encompassing a diverse selection of problem domains: system architecture, control systems, cryptanalysis, data acquisition, and Web development. We have chosen these particular problem domains because they are representative of the kinds of complex problems faced by the practicing software engineer. It is easy to show how certain principles apply to simple problems, but because our focus is on building useful systems for the real world, we are more interested in showing how the object model scales up to complex applications. The development of software systems is rarely amenable to cookbook approaches; therefore, we emphasize the incremental development of applications, guided by a number of sound principles and well-formed models.

    Supplemental Material

A considerable amount of supplemental material is woven throughout the book. Most chapters have sidebars that provide information on related topics. We include an appendix on object-oriented programming languages that summarizes the features of a few common languages. We also provide a glossary of common terms and an extensive classified bibliography that lists references to source material on the object model.

    A Note about Tools

Readers always ask about the tools used to create the diagrams in the book. Primarily, we have used two fine tools for the diagrams: IBM Rational Software Architect and Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect. Why not use just one? The reality of the marketplace is that no tool does everything. The longer you do OOAD, you will eventually find some atypical "corner case" that no tool supports. (In that case, you may have to resort to basic drawing tools to show what you want.) But don't let those rare instances stop you from using robust OOAD tools such as those we mentioned.

    Using This Book

This book may be read from cover to cover or it may be used in less structured ways. If you are seeking a deep understanding of the underlying concepts of the object model or the motivation for the principles of object-oriented development, you should start with Chapter 1 and continue forward in order. If you are primarily interested in learning the details of the notation and process of object-oriented analysis and design, start with Chapters 5 and 6; Chapter 7 is especially useful to managers of projects using this method. If you are most interested in the practical application of object-oriented technology to specific problems, select any or all of Chapters 8 through 12.

    A must have!
    By Kindle Customer
I love this book. And this is my opinion: I bought it the first time back in the late 90s when I was in college and recently I got the latest edition for kindle format so I can access it from my phone. This is not a book that if you read it, you will be an OOP expert, but it helps to understand many concepts. In my case it is part of the foundation of my knowledge as an IT professional. It is so clear and well explained the concept of Class; Object; Polymorphism; Encapsulation, Abstraction, Inheritance, etc..

    Must have this book.
    By R. F. Bower
Only about halfway through but as many say this guy has a genius for explaining the subject that makes it crystal clear. A pleasure to read, nothing dry and stuffy and the analogies are spot-on so that even an old structured programming guy can understand and appreciate OO. I think it will continue to be the go-to reference for a long time to come.

Essential Reading in Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD)
    By Brian Lawler
This 3rd edition is the eagerly and long awaited update to the 2nd edition which was published in 1994. It provides thorough and practical coverage of concepts, techniques, notations and examples for modern object-oriented analysis and design. The material cov-ered draws upon a solid foundation of theoretical work but is con-sistently pragmatic in approach. This book provides an essential body of knowledge for professionals responsible for the analysis and design of complex systems.

As with the second edition, the book is organized into three major sections - Concepts, Method and Applications. Concepts intro-duces the fundamental principles of object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) such as creating abstractions, objects and classes, and how to address the complexities found in a variety of systems. The Method section focuses on how to analyze and design com-plex systems with an emphasis on using UML 2.

This edition follows a similar format and addresses many of the same topics as its predecessor but varies in several areas. Most noticeably, the famous "clouds" and other Booch notations used in the 2nd edition have all been replaced with UML. The UML dia-grams also make frequent use of the newer UML 2 notations such as frames on sequence diagrams and ports on component diagrams.

As a whole, the new set of applications nicely cover a variety of challenges found in modern systems design. There are also few-er code examples in this edition. However, as the frequent use of Courier font suggests, the text still sits conceptually just slightly above code level when that is necessary.

This book is very well organized, written and edited. For example, in the Methods section, the chapter on Notation doesn't merely plod through the syntax of various shapes and line styles but ex-plains each diagram set with regard to intended use and contribu-tion to object-oriented models. There are also clear and informative distinctions between essential techniques and more advanced concepts. Though some concepts clearly build upon each other, the reader is not forced to read the material in a certain order - e.g., references to material in other chapters are clearly marked and summarized.

Diagram styles vary somewhat from chapter to chapter but, as ex-plained in the preface, this is deliberate in order to familiarize the reader with the output of commonly used tools. More extensive or sharply defined distinctions between what is common practice as compared to alternative approaches, including the risks or benefits of either, would have been nice to have but this omission doesn't detract from what is a great book overall.

Though intended primarily for developers and architects of soft-ware systems, the material presented would also be highly valuable to analysts in non-engineering roles such as business systems ana-lysts. It is also a worthwhile read for those working on systems without a software emphasis.

Analysts, designers and architects of complex systems, will find this text provides broad and deep coverage in the current practice of OOAD. As a result, it should regarded as mandatory reading for professionals in those fields.

    good for beginners
    By Irina D.
I had this book when I was 13 (I'm 25 now) and learnt a lot from it. it covers a whole bunch of categories - people, animals, evil creepy stuff, aliens, robots, buildings, cars and planes, dinosaurs, maps... and what's even better this book covers very many drawing styles with various techniques - from realistic drawings to cartoon styles, some on illustration and fonts, introduces perspective, etc. this book is very direct and to the point - no introduction no unnecessary text to make it longer. a really good place to start - after that you will probably figure out what you like to draw most and what direction you should go in. and yeah like I said I had it as a kid and I have it now - it's good for all ages. definitely recommend it to everybody :)

Great Primer on Learning to Draw
    By E. Petersen
My daughter borrowed this book from her middle school's library, then renewed it the maximum of two more times because she was enjoying it so much. When I saw the drawings of cats she had made using the book, I had to buy it for our home library. The book breaks images into their fundamental 2D shapes and lines, and then details how to go about realistically filling in the shapes with color, using a variety of art media (i.e. colored pencil, watercolor, paint). Sections range from drawing people, animals, insects, to fantasy creatures ("ghosts and monsters"), architectural drawings (using perspective), letter forms and map-making. There is information on techniques to use for drawing and art materials. I highly recommend this book to beginning artists of all ages.

Tip: Study Guide Comes with this DVD
    By Jamie
I ordered the book, study guide, and DVD. I looked everywhere to try to figure out if a study guide came with the DVD and couldnt find it in the description so I ordered the study guide extra. When I opened the package everything I ordered was in perfect condition, etc. The only complaint I have, if you can even call it a complaint, is that I didnt have to order a seperate study guide because it turns out one DOES come with the DVD. I havent started the study yet but am looking forward to beginning this week with friends....maybe we will end up needing the extra study guide! Either way, I thought I would save someone else the extra expense.

This is a Best Yes buy!
    By Moonglotexas
"The decisions we make dictate the schedules we keep. The schedules we keep determine the lives we live. The lives we live determine how we spend our souls." When reading this line in the marketing of this book, it captured me. How simply my life can change course in the little decisions, it struck me how much power is in an answer: yes or no. Lysa's powerful writing changes one's mindset, shaping the decision making process. Wisdom flows through every page, clarity bringing insights like the following (a few of my favourites):

"We must not confuse the command to love with the disease to please."

"The one who obeys God's instruction for today will develop a keen awareness of His direct for tomorrow."

"That little act of obedience somehow unplugged my spiritual ears."

Rich in biblical truths, drawn from lives lived thousands of years in the past, Lysa casts new light on familiar stories and digs out gems one may have never heard. This reference scripture stuck with me:
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it'" Isaiah 30:21
It sounds so simple, just walk in it, and yet through funny and relatable stories, Lysa highlights how hard it really is to live this out. She elegantly counters every opposition one can think of as to why one can't live this out and gives practical ways to live it out and how to changes habits.

"Knowledge is wisdom that comes from acquiring truth. Insight is wisdom that comes from
living out the truth we acquire. Discernment is wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit's reminders of that knowledge and insight." Another fantastic summary of the process, this highlights how Lysa walks us through giving us knowledge from biblical truth, insight from the activities she suggests we try and discernment by encouraging our journey with the Holy Spirit.

"We want big directional signs from God. God just wants us to pay attention." And that to me sounds like a new year's resolution with which I can work! I can pause for that moment of clarity to hear God and choose obedience in the little things. I highly recommend this book and look forward breaking out my Best Yes in 2017!

A beacon of light for the worn out, burnt out woman!
    By B.Beville
Lisa shares her heart with humor and insight on what it means to make wise decisions, the best decisions in the midst of indecision and plots a Biblical path to our best "yeses". I SO (as I'm sure most women will) relate to the constant "indecisijig" of choosing between a good yes and a good yes. Thanks, Lisa, for gentle reminders of what our best yeses truly are! This book opened my awareness and inspired me to stay close to the One whose yes will always bring peace and greater faith!

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. The Inmates Are Running the Asylum argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining, The Inmates Are Running the Asylum uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

    Amazon.com Review
The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done.

Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall

Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.

    About the Author

As a software inventor in the mid-70s, Alan Cooper got it into his head that there must be a better approach to software construction. This new approach would free users from annoying, difficult and inappropriate software behavior by applying a design and engineering process that focuses on the user first and silicon second. Using this process, engineering teams could build better products faster by doing it right the first time.

His determination paid off. In 1990 he founded Cooper, a technology product design firm. Today, Cooper's innovative approach to software design is recognized as an industry standard. Over a decade after Cooper opened its doors for business, the San Francisco firm has provided innovative, user-focused solutions for companies such as Abbott Laboratories, Align Technologies, Discover Financial Services, Dolby, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Softek, Hewlett Packard, Informatica, IBM, Logitech, Merck-Medco, Microsoft, Overture, SAP, SHS Healthcare, Sony, Sun Microsystems, the Toro Company, Varian and VISA. The Cooper team offers training courses for the Goal-Directed interaction design tools they have invented and perfected over the years, including the revolutionary technique for modeling and simulating users called personas, first introduced to the public in 1999 via the first edition of The Inmates.

In 1994, Bill Gates presented Alan with a Windows Pioneer Award for his invention of the visual programming concept behind Visual Basic, and in 1998 Alan received the prestigious Software Visionary Award from the Software Developer's Forum. Alan introduced a taxonomy for software design in 1995 with his best-selling first book, About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design. Alan and co-author Robert Reimann published a significantly revised edition, About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design, in 2003.

Alan's wife, Susan Cooper, is President and CEO of Cooper. They have two teenage sons, Scott and Marty, neither of whom is a nerd. In addition to software design, Alan is passionate about general aviation, urban planning, architecture, motor scooters, cooking, model trains and disc golf, among other things. Useful ideas but infuriatingly arrogant
    By Ellen Isaacs
The Inmates are Running the Asylum makes the business case for interaction designers playing a central role in the development of technology products. It starts by providing examples of technology that is difficult, frustrating, humiliating, and even dangerous to use. Cooper argues that, although people have gotten used to being humiliated by technology, it doesn't have to be this way. His claim is that most technology, especially software, is designed by engineers who think differently than non-technical people: they enjoy being challenged by difficult problems and they are trained to think in terms of "edge cases" rather than on the common case. Thus when engineers design software, they tend to create products with far too many neat features that clutter the interface and make it difficult to do the simpler tasks. In the second part of the book, Cooper describes an approach that he and his design firm uses to simplify products and keep them focused on the users' needs, eliminating or hiding more complex features that few people use. He gives some specific and compelling examples of how they took a different approach to an interesting design problem and keep the product simple while still being powerful. He makes the case that you can grab a market with powerful, feature-rich, complex software that is frustrating to use, but you don't build customer loyalty that way; as soon as a well-designed version of that product comes along, your customers will defect. If you delight the user with your products, on the other hand, you will engender deep loyalty that will help see you through some poor business decisions. His primary example of this is the fanatical loyalty that Apple garners from its users, compared with the rage that Windows users feel toward Microsoft. Apple has weathered some horrendous business decisions and still survives, whereas Microsoft users are more than happy to defect when a better product comes along, and in fact revel in the defection.
I also don't think he makes it clear enough that he's not proposing doing *fewer* features to make products simpler and easier to use, he's talking about doing *different* features. For example, he argues that software should not be so lazy; it should stop making the user do work that the computer is better suited to doing (e.g. remembering where they put files), and it should stop making users go through the same steps over and over again, as if it were the first time they had ever met this user. He argues that "Do you really mean it?" popups are evil (and I couldn't agree more - as most of my coworkers know), and instead it should be easy to undo anything, so it's not so catastrophic to do something you didn't meant to do. I agree with all that, but of course building a reasonable "undo" mechanism is a very complex feature. To cure the "How could you possibly want to quit my ever-so-important application?" popup syndrome, it would be much better to make the software very fast to start up, and to have it come back in exactly the state you left it in, so that quitting when you didn't mean to is not a problem. All of this is well worth doing, but it is lots of engineering work; it's another feature. I'm all for shifting engineer resources to these features instead of the "but somebody *might* want to do this obscure thing" features, but it should be clear that this is not doing fewer features, it's doing different ones, ones that help smooth the user's interaction with the software. Cooper seems to imply that engineers are so lazy that they don't want to do these features, but most engineers work very hard and care about their product. The key is to make it clear why doing this feature right will make such a big difference to the product. My experience has been that the more you understand the work involved in doing a feature, the better you can work with engineers. Not only can you better trade off engineering effort for user benefit, but engineers respect you for understanding what you're asking.
Having said all that, I can't deny that I finished this book with some very specific ideas about improving my own designs, and a renewed sense of the importance of what I do. I just wish Cooper could have articulated the case without putting interaction designers "on a throne."

Great Ideas, Not Always Well Presented
    By Brian Curtis
The culture of software development is changing, but grudgingly. The short-sighted notion "It's better to be first with something bad than second with something perfect" has been discredited after too long a reign as the New Paradigm of the Information Age ("It's brilliant because it's counter-intuitive!"), and instead has been exposed for what it is: bad business and a lousy way to treat customers. Alan Cooper's book helps make sense of things as software developers, after decades of coding for each other, are forced to begin acknowledging the cold and strange outside world of Real Life Users.
Cooper's writing is generally clear and easy to follow. He documents his points well and uses numerous true-to-life examples to illustrate the concepts. The ATM analysis, for example, is both effective and memorabl: Why DOES the ATM list account types you don't have, permitting an invalid selection? Why can't you return to a previous screen to correct mistakes, instead of starting over from scratch? Why doesn't the system give you an error message that helps you understand the problem, rather than "Unable to complete transaction"? No one even bothers to ask these questions, Cooper points out, because we've accepted the default structure of ATM screens--which were created for the convenience of coders and system engineers, rather than users.
Cooper also performs a valuable service in demolishing that old standby programmers' excuse: "We don't call any of the shots-it's all management's fault!" Bull. Half the managers in the computer industry are former coders themselves (and laboring under an outmoded and faulty mental model of how software development must occur, by the way). The other half are so non-technical that they're at the mercy of the coders, who are free to decide which features are most important, which will take too long, and ultimately, which will or won't make the cut for the next release. Coders ARE driving this bus, if occasionally from the back seat, and they need to take responsibility for what they produce-and be humble enough to admit that an indispensable part of the development process (interface/interaction design) is beyond their abilities.
That said, Cooper's writing style itself is less than perfect. He presents many compelling case histories, but at times he seems to lean too heavily on insider stories, as if showing off his contacts and expertise in the industry. And, of course, Cooper is far too much in love with his "dancing bear" metaphor; long before you've reached the halfway point, you'll be muttering, "One page...just ONE page without a `dancing bearware' reference, PLEASE! That's all I ask!"
But the messages and lessons in this book are too important to ignore. As Cooper tries to remind us, it is everyday users-not the power users, not even the "computer literate"-who are the core audience. They're the ones you have to design for: a successful interaction design, rather than a burgeoning list of clever features, is what will determine your product's success or failure.

    Extremely poor
    By E. PEPKE
I have been passionately interested in usability issues and ways to improve them for a quarter century. I read all that I can on the subject to gain insight into how to make things better. This book, however, fails miserably.
It is about 50% personal exorcism, projected onto others, of his own former self. It is about 50% advertisement for the kind of consultant he now stylizes himself as. It is 100% the kind of book on usability you would expect the "Father of Visual Basic" to produce.
There is some good information in this book, which would normally merit a rating of two or three stars. However, by its polemical tone, it diverts attention away from really good books by such authors as Donald Norman and Jef Raskin, and, for that matter, Cooper's own _About Face_, which is quite good.
If you hate unusable products and are looking for nice, easy scapegoats to be angry about, this will be an enjoyable read. If, however, you are interested in the actual reasons that products are poorly usable or are interested in how to improve the world, this book is worse than useless.
One histrionic account describes how he cannot buy a VCR that lets him record shows by setting time with a knob. This would be excusable except for the fact that, the year this book was published, a remote control was being sold that did exactly that, and it recieved saturation advertising on television. The problem is that nobody bought it. Demand was so poor that it isn't made any more, and no sales staff I have spoken with has remembered anyone ever asking for such a device.
Yes, there are reasons that devices are not very usable, but in order to understand them one has to look beyond the simple, adversarial, supply-side approach that Cooper and the majority of usability gurus seem to be stuck in. Unfortunately, the field has become so dominated by this kind of ressentiment thinking, that it is unlikely that the real issues can even be published, let alone addressed.
Failing that, however, there are still books that can inspire or help build a more usable world. _Asylum_ is simply not one of them, that's all.
