Taha an extraordinary renovator of Islamic thinking

This is an excellent, well written, and well document book about a leading though largely ignored in the West, modern Arab thinker in Islam. The book's title captures Mahmoud Taha's quest for the absolute. Though his writings reflect a high level of thought it nonetheless is firmly rooted in everyday's reality. His balance between mystic and pragmatic an political thought makes him unique among modern thinkers.

The author, M. Mahmoud has dug very deep in Taha's writings and provides a critical balance between an account of such thinking and an evaluation of Taha's thought. His vast knowledge of Islamic thought is a major asset in tracing back the various influences that have affected or impacted Taha's thought.

I believe this book is a must to have and read for anyone interested in the lively debates in modern Islamic thought.

About the Author
After reading Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University, Linda Davies worked for seven years as an investment banker, specializing in leveraged buyouts before moving onto the trading floor where she again focused on leveraged products. There she dreamed up the plot to her first globally successful financial thriller, Nest of Vipers. As a full time writer, Linda has written five more books for adults and four books for children. Her most recent thriller, ARk Storm, will be published by Tor Books in 2013. After leaving investment banking, she lived for three years in Peru, then a stint in London, before she moved with her husband and three children to the Middle East. In 2005 she and her husband were sailing in the Arabian Gulf when they were kidnapped by Iranian forces. They were held hostage on mainland Iran for two weeks before being released. After eight happy years living in Dubai, Linda returned to the UK in 2012 where she lives with her family deep in the English countryside.

This felt more like a romantic story than financial thriller

The plot did not seem as tight as the first novel. The dialogue felt rushed and unnatural at times. Topic is interesting. This felt more like a romantic story than financial thriller.

Something Wild (paperback)

Linda Davies writes with the two things in mind which really matter to me as a reader: a good story, and eloquent literary style. It is a treat to be able to take a holiday from crude reality in an exciting narrative, while still retaining the satisfaction of complex characters and good imagery.

About the Author

Jo Weldon is the headmistress and founder of the award-winning New York School of Burlesque, and many of her graduates have gone on to become burlesque stars themselves. She is known as the premier educator and authority on burlesque, and is the coexecutive director at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, working with burlesque instructors around the world to develop curriculum and standards for teaching burlesque history and technique. Everything you need to get started

The revival of Burlesque, or the art of strip tease, has spread across the United States as a form of female empowerment, creativity and community. What Jo Weldon or "Jo Boobs" provides in this book is nothing short of extraordinary. To my knowledge nothing else exists out there in book form that gives such detailed instruction on working with pasties, fans, makeup, costume, use of glitter, rhinestones, body makeup, hair, and overall performance style and confidence. Jo is specific. Not only does she delve into the history of burlesque and how she herself transformed herself from a featured stripper in commercial clubs to the definitive Burlesque expert that she has become today. Jo also give tips on working with producers, increasing your likelihood of getting booked and general etiquette towards the audience and other performers. This is far from a fluff vanity piece. It is a practical handbook with real life working knowledge that any aspiring burlesque performer could use today to help them become the best performer they are capable of becoming.

The book is easy to read, contains detailed photographs of step by step instruction on working with fans, how to build pasties, and of course twirling tassels. Jo also includes hundreds of photographs of fellow burlesque artists from around the country. So even though some of the information is technical the book is far from boring.

And as a burlesque producer myself, I wish any newcomer would memorize chapter 10 which includes information for newcomers on the best ways of getting booked again and again. It is not just about being the best dancer, but showing respect towards others and earning trust so that people will want to hire you again and again. I wish this particular set of skills was taught everywhere!!

Burlesque artists all over the country who aren't lucky enough to get to take a class from Jo at the New York School of Burlesque can use this handbook to add that extra layer of professionalism and magic to their acts. And even fans of the art form will also enjoy reading about what makes Burlesque or Burley-Q so special.

An entertaining book for those curious in burlesque, newbies and experienced performers!

One part memoir, another part history lessons and a whole lot of how-to, this book is quite applicable to whatever one might be looking for in a burlesque book. It works for the curious, the newbies and those already performing. I wish I would have had this book when I first started getting into the world of Burlesque for I learned and read a lot about backstage etiquette and creating routines that I had to learn the hard way or have been struggling with.

Another great thing about the book is the way Jo makes you feel like you know all these performers as well. She frequently discusses their acts, their advice and uses her own personal pictures, making it seem like you are looking through someone's (fun and scandalous) scrap-book.

The only parts of the book that weren't enthralling for me were her step by step instructions on the NYSoB routine and fan dance techniques, but that is only because I took the 4-week essentials burlesque class where I was taught these techniques and moves in person, so reading them, although a good reminder, just couldn't live up to the real experience. Really though, I think that says something about the Burlesque Handbook, the only negative was that I was given some of the information from the author, herself, in person!

This book is a handful of vampire inspired stories from Ireland. As I find both topics entrancing, I had to have this book! And it did not disappoint. Sure, the tales are simple, and the book is an easy read. But I know I will be shivering under the covers tonight, thinking about those scary stories! Heartbreaking, Solid Story

Deviate is the second installment in Tracy Clark's The Light Key Trilogy. The trilogy features 17-year old Cora Sandoval as the main protagonist. If you have read Scintillate, or read my review, then you know that a whole lot of pain, suffering, and heartbreak found its way into Cora's otherwise quiet life. Cora has found out that she is a rare human called Scintilla, and discovered that she wasn't truly alone just yet. She also discovered that another race called the Arrazi are itching to wipe out the last remaining Scintilla from the Earth.

Alongside Cora is fellow Scintilla/Italian Giovanni Teso, her cousin Mari, best friend Dun, as well as her mother Grace who had disappeared for 12 years while searching for answers. Now, with the Arrazi in full beast mode to hunt them down, and a devastating loss that has left Cora reeling, Cora & group need answers. But, without Grace's research notebook, they are up the creek without a paddle. Plus, there is an even bigger challenge awaiting them and will be lucky to get out alive.

One of the more interesting aspects of this series is Cora's psychometry powers. Whenever she touches something, a tattoo forms some where on her body after giving her a vision of what the object hold. This makes things rather interesting and dangerous when she is trying to hide who she is. Deviate is actually a bit different from Scintillate in that Clark alternatives narratives between Cora and Irishman Finn Doyle who just happens to be one of the Arrazi.

Finn's narrative is from a boy who doesn't want to be like his parents or his demented Uncle Clancy who can astral project and discover where Cora's group is found. Finn has some choices to make. He can either give up and not feed or kill anyone, or he can accept his fate, while trying to also help Cora who he still has feelings for. Finn still has a desire to try and help Cora and her group even after they suffer some really heartbreaking losses that will leave you breathless.

I dare say that there are a whole lot of surprises waiting for readers once you get past the second half of this book. Surprises that leave you with a very, very interesting ending that pretty much forces you to read the final book in the series called Illuminate. By the end of this book, Cora has really taken a huge leap forward as a character, and has become a the groups leaders thanks to all the losses and betrayal. I am eager to see how Clark manages to wrap this series up!

expertly weaves history, art, and literature into this unique tale

After reading the first book in this series Scintillate, I was super excited to read Deviate and continue Cora's journey to uncover the mysteries surrounding her people and their history, as well as to see what was to come of her love for Finn after he turned out to be an Arrazi.

There are so many things to love about this series. Clark expertly weaves history, art, and literature into this unique tale and the outcome is amazing. The mysteries definitely kept me intrigued. But I did find this book to have a bit of that middle book syndrome. A lot of stuff just starts to feel like " Okay I get it. Every time they seem to be getting out of this mess they get into an ever bigger one. Gotcha. " so although the story plot is still good and I like that we moved toward the set up for the next book I feel like this book was doing a lot of filling in between book one and what's going to go down in book three. With that said I still think it was all important and not boring per say just me going okay okay I need to find out where this is going while things are still good and before they get too repetitive. I am still very much caught up in this story and desperately want to read the third book to see how this is going to end. ( Please let Cora and Finn get their HEA. Please. Please. Please! )

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Deviate is the second novel in The Light Key Trilogy by Tracy Clark. It's the continuing story of a young lady trying to find out who and what she is, and who wants her dead. This story just keeps getting better! I've come to admire this young lady as she has grown and became stronger throughout this story. The characters are so vivid that I feel as if I'm in the story with them. There is plenty of suspense that keeps me glued to the story. I love Tracy's writing style as it reads smoothly. I've started the last book in the trilogy and I'm so eager to find out what happens with this strong female lead. It's a definite must read trilogy!

Elaine Showlater's The Female Malady: Women, Madness and English Culture, 1830-1980 is a brilliant discussion of the perception and treatment of mental illness, focusing on the female perspective. Showalter's research is thorough, and her presentation of information shows a care and attentiveness to her material that increases the confidence of the reader. Drawing on a cultural sangria of material, The Female Malady traces the systematic (and often blundering) treatment of mental disease, focusing on how women influenced the establishment as not only patients, but commentators in the form of employees and writers, activists and advocates.

The majority of the text focuses on the plight of the Victorian woman, and how doctors and the medical profession responded to what they perceived as the nervous energy attached to the rising discontent of women as a gendered class. However, the text does not end there, and moves on to discuss everything from evolving practices in institutions, the feminization of mental disease, the presence and treatment of male patients, psychoanalysis, and the feminist therapy movement. Showalter skillfully blends historical observation and study with careful literary analysis to give her reader and understanding of the material from several angles and increase their awareness of the historical implications of insanity not just for the evolution of women, but for the sciences and literary fields alike. At just 250 pages, The Female Malady is by no means a complete history, but proves to be a useful volume on its own, especially for those considering cultural and literary implications of insanity beyond the straight-forward studies of psychology or psychoanalytic theory.
