About the Author

Tom White has been an Apache Hadoop committer since February 2007, and is a member of the Apache Software Foundation. He works for Cloudera, a company set up to offer Hadoop support and training. Previously he was as an independent Hadoop consultant, working with companies to set up, use, and extend Hadoop. He has written numerous articles for O'Reilly, java.net and IBM's developerWorks, and has spoken at several conferences, including at ApacheCon 2008 on Hadoop. Tom has a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and a Master's in Philosophy of Science from the University of Leeds, UK.

Great book for new API

I have around 14 years of java experience and this was my first book ever on Hadoop. So far I have been reading from internet. I agree that at times it's hard to understand things in one shot but once you re read them, they get clear. The best thing about this book is that it covers everything in new API. I believe Tom White worked really hard to make the overall picture easy enough to understand.

I would suggest one thing while reading this book, please have the computer and some IDE open while reading it otherwise you will get lost in theory (which is great nonetheless) and when you actually try to code later, things will go off the top of your head.

Another thing is that, there are various things which you'll understand only after reaching at 4th or 5th chapter. If you are learning Hadoop (from scratch) and you have read its first few chapters only, you may find it difficult but once you reach at 4th or 5th chapters then I'm sure you will find this book amazing.

Nice update for an already great book

Nice update for an already great book. As other reviews have already mentioned, if you're new to Hadoop, you'll probably need to read a few chapters in order to really get a good picture of what Hadoop is, and how it works. This is not necessarily a problem with the book, but just the nature of the beast when learning as complex as Hadoop. If you're new to Hadoop, take the time to work through the first few chapters, and maybe expect to come back and re-read parts later. If you're an experienced engineer who is looking to get up-to-speed with what has changed in recent versions, you'll definitely find what you're looking for here.

I appreciate that this book covers high-level concepts as well as dives deep into the technical details that you will need to know for the design, implementation and day-to-day running of Hadoop and its various associated technologies.

The Best!

This huge guide has everything you need to know about Hadoop. I like that it has little asides that explain some concepts in more detail, as well as detailed examples. I've always had good experience with O'Reilly books. The thing I appreciate the most is that there are instructions on how to actually install Hadoop on your machine in the appendix.

About the Author
Jane Flint is a Professor of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. Dr. Flint's research focuses on investigation of the molecular mechanisms by which gene products of adenoviruses modulate host cell pathways and anti-viral defenses to allow efficient reproduction in normal human cells.

Vincent Racaniello is Higgins Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center. But when the Marines turned to its Navajo recruits to develop and implement a secret military language, they created the only unbroken code in modern warfare—and helped assure victory for the United States over Japan in the South Pacific.

I met my friend, Navajo code talker Chester Nez, more than four years ago. Writing Chester's memoir has changed both of our lives for the better. I have gained a second family, and Chester is pleased that people will know the story of himself and his fellow Navajos, the WWII code talkers. It is a story that remained a secret for too long. We hope that you will enjoy reading our book as much as we enjoyed writing it!!

The book's dedication says a lot about the focus of the book and Chester's desire to have all code talkers recognized:

This book is dedicated to the 420 World War II Navajo Marine code talkers - men who developed and implemented an unbreakable communications system that helped ensure the American defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific War.

When the war ended, other combatants were free to discuss their roles in the service and to receive recognition for their actions. But the Marines instructed us, the code talkers, to keep our accomplishments secret. We kept our own counsel, hiding our deeds from family, friends and acquaintances. Our code was finally declassified in 1968, twenty-three years after the war's end.

This book may be my story, but it is written for all of these men.

May they and their loved ones walk in beauty.

About the Author
Chester Nez was a World War II veteran who indispensably served his country as a Navajo code talker. He passed away in 2014.

Judith Schiess Avila is a code talker scholar with the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities Chautauqua Program. She tours the state giving presentations on the topic.

Be very careful ....

I can only advise prospective readers to be very careful if you have work that has to be done ... you will NOT want to put this book down once you start reading. As a former high school teacher I wish that this book was required reading for every teen. The work ethic, dedication, and moral character demonstrated by Chester Nez is genuinely inspirational. I learned a great deal about the Navajo culture and values, and how these values were integral to their success in battle, and their entire life. The campaigns on Guadalcanal, Guam, Peleliu and Bougainville owe a great deal of their success to the actions of the Navajo Code Talkers. Many of the code talkers have gone to their reward unable to relate their invaluable contribution to winning the war in the Pacific. We, as Americans, are truly fortunate that Chester Nez finally told the story of these incredible individuals.

Semper Fi, Chester ... I can only hope that some day I may have the honor of meeting you.

A rare book

If you are looking for a one of a kind history book this is it. There really is only one book written by a Code Talker and this book he explains how the famous talkers where formed and where they served.

One of the more interesting aspects of this book concerns the man’s life and culture. The author spends a lot of time explaining Navaho traditions and beliefs. He does a priceless job of interweaving this into the history of the second world war. This is truly what makes his book special. I enjoyed these moments learning about the Navaho as much as I enjoyed the sections dealing with the war in eh Pacific.

None-the-less a sense of modesty of the author leaves out specific details regarding his personal performance in the war. But he showers his contemporaries with praise for their action. I would have liked more detail about the specific battles. This may be a cultural thing as he says his people are very private people who do not boast of their personal accomplishments.

This book has a priceless place in history. I was amazed to find that native American languages had been used in WWI to confuse to Germans. However, they were not used to a higher level until World War Two.

There are many great personal accounts of World War Two. But there really isn’t anything to compare this one to. It is really the only book written by a Code Talker. If you want to know more about the war in the Pacific in general I would recommend, “With the Old Breed,” by E.B. Sledge an, “Helmet for my Pillow,“ by Robert Leckie. Both of these men fought in battles that would have had code talkers serving win the ranks.

They are great reminders of the changes that WWII started in our society and continued through the 80s before the inevitable ebb of diversity began to swing the other direction. It's important to remember the contributions to freedom that native americans, blacks, hispanics, and even Japanese-Americans made.

Do not expect 100% accuracy for the flow of battles and such. That is not the intent of this book, it is one mans remembrance of how things went. The more important part is his role, and you won't find a more detailed place to see the code-talkers role explained.

Throughout my lifetime, I've poured over the accounts of the marine assaults, and in every one, the code-talkers appear as a crucial element, finally I actually get insight into their story specifically. I was impressed with the Corps too, for recognizing and nurturing a winning talent and capability. It showed yet another bit of the foresight of some top Marines for innovation (something I've often noted in the Marines WWII attempts to go outside the box).

Such luminaries as Richard Mabey, Robert Macfarlane, Ted Hughes and Andrew Motion have cited this as one of the most important books in 20th Century nature writing, and the bestselling author Mark Cocker has provided an introduction on the importance of Baker, his writings and the diaries – creating the essential volume of Baker's writings.

Werner Herzog says you should read this book.

Purchased this after listening to an interview with director Werner Herzog, who stated that this is the only book that he *requires* all of his film students to take. He writes:

"I’m Werner Herzog, I’m a filmmaker normally but I do read. The book I would really recommend is an obscure book published in 1967: “The Peregrine,” by J.A. Baker, who is somebody about whom we know nothing, literally nothing. He wrote in Great Britain when the last peregrines were dying out—now they have bounced back a little bit. He observes peregrines and it’s a most incredible book. It has prose of the caliber that we have not seen since Joseph Conrad. And an ecstasy—a delirious sort of love for what he observes.

The intensity and the ecstasy of observation is something that you have to have as a filmmaker or somebody who loves literature. Whoever really loves literature, whoever really loves movies, should read that book.

In a way, it’s almost like a transubstantiation, like in religion, where the observer becomes almost the object—in this case the falcon—he observes. He writes, for example, about the falcon soaring high up, and then higher and higher until the falcon is only a dot. Then he writes, “and then we swoop down,” as if he had become a falcon himself. And there’s a variety of moments where you can tell that he has completely entered into the existence of a falcon. And this is what I do when I make a film, I step outside of myself into an ekstasis in Greek, to step outside of your own body, a point outside. Baker steps into the fog and in an ecstasy of observing the world it is unprecedented."

OK, so it was a bad idea for a 5-year old, but.....

One of my granddaughters developed an extraordinary fascination for peregrine falcons. To accommodate, I bought a variety of peregrine-themed items (plush toy, video, maps...) and among them, this book. Every thing was delivered promptly....this book from England; but when I arrived and asked after the collection of items sent, I was met with stern criticism about the book. I had read a bit on line, and had expected the opposite. I sat down with the book and was immediately enchanted. Choosing another entry point at random, I again found myself engaged and wondrous. A third roll of the dice produced the same result. I sat my granddaughter down and began to read and to explain why what I read/heard was so marvelous. She cocked her head, spun on her heel, and was gone. "Can we play monster?" echoed from the next room.
I'm counting the days until she's six. None of you should wait, unless you're five.

This book is a treasure of the English language

No other way to put it: This book is a treasure of the English language.

In The Peregrine J.A. Baker describes how he tracked and trekked over months and miles in his native England to watch and record in language like you've never read how peregrines hunt and feed and fly and play and rest. The language he uses to construct his sentences is like none other I have ever read. It's a vivid mix of nature writing and the best poetry. The text is so dense, the sentences are so packed with words bringing life to action--there really is no reading experience I can compare this to. I could only stand to read a few pages at a time; "relish" not "read" would be the better word there.

This is more than "nature writing," too. Baker gets under the very surface of life to expose what lurks. Just a few excepts to illustrate:

"The hardest thing of all to see is what is really there."

"Terror seeks out the odd, and the sick, and the lost."

“There is no mysterious essence we can call a 'place'. Place is change. It is motion killed by the mind, and preserved in the amber of memory.”

“Whatever is destroyed, the act of destruction does not vary much. Beauty is vapour from the pit of death.”

I cannot give The Peregrine anything less than 5 stars. It's more than a book, it is a reading experience. Reading it will expand your senses. It will enliven you and enrich you as a human being. I think that's the greatest thing we can expect from any book.

Critically Important!

I am the director of a small learning center that teaches a wide spectrum of academic skills to students. Last night I was working with one of our students on the ACT. We used the "REAL ACT" guide, which I have always liked, and then went to Erica Meltzer's Complete Guide for more skill and strategy for the test.WOW! As usual Erica came to rescue, providing strategies for students at every level of skill development. We have a long history of great success with middle school test preparation, but using Erica's books has taken us to a much higher level with high school students! I cannot recommend her work OR her website highly enough. Check out [...]and BUY HER BOOKS to help your son or daughter!

Next to the Official Guides, Meltzer's books are the best.

As an English tutor and teacher, this book has been invaluable in terms of explaining how to approach the various multiple-choice questions test takers encounter (ex: direct, inference, tone, vocabulary, etc.) I'm a fan of Meltzer's last two books (The Complete Guides to SAT Reading and ACT Writing) and this book does not disappointment. As her previous books, this book is also use-friendly for teachers and beneficial for students.

Her two practice tests at the end of this book also add extra assignments to the dearth of official and official looking ACT tests available.

Yes, the book has some typos and the her writing isn't the most gripping nor compelling work you will read; however, in terms of content and strategy, I don't know of a better book to supplement the reading section of the Real ACT Prep Guide.

Yokai Museum: beautiful book using many types of art

"Yokai Museum: The Art of Japanese Supernatural Beings from Yumoto Koichi Collection" is an exceptionally beautiful volume, issued by the museum whose name appears in this title and presented by the same expert who published "Mythical Beasts of Japan." In contrast to this other book, "Yokai Museum" examines its supernatural beings through a wider variety of art forms. Thus we have not only paintings and woodblock prints, but also sword furnishings, playing cards, toys, kimono, dress accessories, and even porcelains. Further, this book has greater context regarding yokai themselves and their use as visual images. Even so, readers seeking real depth of information on Japanese supernatural beings would do well to team "Yokai Museum" with Henri Joly's "Legend in Japanese Art."
