About the Author

PHILIPPA X. GIRLING has nineteen years of experience in the global securities industry, working in the fields of operational risk, training, project management, and organizational change. She currently serves as Business Chief Risk Officer for Capital One Commercial Bank. Over her career, Girling has held several operational risk leadership roles, including heading the global corporate operational risk functions at Morgan Stanley and Nomura. Most recently, she has focused on operational risk training, teaching in the operational risk executive education program at Columbia University, and leading operational risk education sessions for the London Business School, Rutgers University, and Carnegie Mellon. Having established a global reputation as an operational risk expert, Girling was selected as one of the "top 50 faces of operational risk" by Operational Risk and Regulation magazine. She holds an English law degree from the University of East Anglia, England, and is a member of the New York State Bar Association. She is a holder of the GARP Financial Risk Manager accreditation and is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University.

The Definitive Guide

I've been an operational risk professional for more than a decade. I've been in op risk, business continuity, IT risk, and Compliance roles and there are entry level subject area specific training and lesson material for all of those except op risk, which is the discipline that ties everything together. In today's financial services business (and, I would suppose other all other industries, but I'm in finance), the pressures to reduce risk and to provide reliable mechanisms for reporting and identifying areas of risk are only increasing. If you are in the finance industry, regulators are expecting you to know the concepts in this book: RCSA, policy and procedure management, Basel accords, issue management, etc. This is the best overview guide I have seen, and it works well for new hires, executives unfamiliar with op risk concepts, and for management in companies where regulatory pressure is increasing.

On the whole, ORM is a comprehensive and well-documented guide to understand how operational risk has emerged as a common thread in enterprise wide risk management today. It discusses the critical elements needed for operational risk frameworks in the current markets, and should be a valuable reference for professionals within risk disciplines, but also for those in Compliance, Audit, Ops, Legal, and even the Board of Directors. Also likely to benefit are students and those looking to understand the relationships between some of the risk events that shaped our recent history. It has numerous examples of sample frameworks and pointed out how organizations are now driven by an evolving regulatory landscape.
At the end of the day, operational risk is a proprietary endeavor for any organization, but the author seemed to take the approach to provide education, practical examples and ideas to promote discussion and stimulate a new set of industry best practices.

Some areas, such as design and performance of controls should have been explained in more detailed with examples.
More details and guidance should also have been given on the risk matrix, reputational risk and risk appetite.

About the Author

Michael Chazan is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at Yale University.

Before coming to Toronto, Dr. Chazan was a postdoctoral fellow with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Among his field experience are excavations in New Jersey, France, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and South Africa.

Dr. Chazan's publications include a monograph on the Lower Paleolithic site of Holon, Israel, coauthored with Liora Horwitz.

Dr. Chazan is currently engaged in a project on the Earlier Stone Age of South Africa:

Lots of information, TERRIBLE editing

I received this book as a gift, after having heard great things about it. After owning it for a few months, I've come to the conclusion that this is an excellent example of when not to buy a book based on online reviews alone. (ironic that I should be writing that in just such a review, isn't it?)

The summary is right there in my title, "Lots of information, TERRIBLE editing". there are typos on nearly half the pages, several captions are switched, the insets refer to pictures as being below when they're above and vice versa, and some images were clearly simply cut from websites and scaled out of proportion without any regard to their quality. (the entire alternative energy section springs to mind)

If you have any experience with canning whatsoever, then before you buy this book you should know that a disproportionate percentage of the book is devoted to canning your food. While some topics get a single page worth of text, canning alone apparently warrants forty seven.

If for some reason you already own this book and are reading this, please pay attention when reading the edible poisonous mushroom section. Although its caption is accurate, the VERY POISONOUS wild amanita mushroom is featured in a picture without its own heading.

And finally, a note to Ms. Gehring:

My apologies if the above comes off as harsh. It is readily apparent that a lot of work went into gathering the information contained in your book, but it's just as apparent that little to no work went into the editing process. I realize that things like typefaces are important. But text that relates accurately to the illustration, and illustrations that are legible are just as important, if not more so.
As this is the first printing, I hope my criticism can be considered constructive, and your next edition will be greatly improved.

I love the information in this book, However the print is way too small. That makes it difficult to read.

The canning times and pressures I'm not sure of, it is not listed that they are the approved ones from the FDA to avoid botulism.

Over all a lot of useful information to have on hand.

Sexy Short Story

Married for five years, Bruce can not believe his wife faked an orgasm. He always prided himself in giving his partners pleasure and this was his wife, his woman. Was he so off base, that he couldn't connect with her? Couldn’t give her what she needed? Melissa was taught that sex was a bad thing. Now she was having trouble letting go of her inhibitions and enjoying sex with her husband. As much as she loved him things had changed. She needed more. Bruce needed to change things, make things better for both of them. Make Melissa feel safe and comfortable with her sexuality and with him. And so their journey begins.

I loved the interaction between this couple. You could totally feel the love between them in this book. The story was good. I really liked the characters personalities and how her husband really wanted to make changes for the better not just for himself and did it with making his wife feel better about herself not by putting her down or making her feel bad. Just an overall great story.
