In addition, he gives a fascinating account of the detective work needed in discovering new diseases. Although focusing his re ports on San Francisco and New York's gay communities and research centers in Atlanta and the Washington, D.C. area, Shilts dramatically explores the interna tional problem of AIDS. Reagan fiddled while San Francisco burned

This white hot memoir of the discovery of the AIDS virus and the race for its recognition is a searing indictment of American inaction and an aloof Reagan administration. The "Butcher's Bill," the tally of deaths to AIDS, is a steady drumbeat in each chapter as LGBT activists on the ground race to care for the dying as bureaucracy hampers research and recognition for the virus. Shilts, who eventually succumbed to the virus, does not pretend to report independently, but rather as a member of the group of men most at risk. Of particular interest is the stylistic difference in the way East Coast LGBT organizations differed from their counterparts in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Some of Shilts' points have been criticized in recent years, but for a ground report this is indespensible.

I have only read 80% of the book. It was wearing on my emotions and I had to put it down. It's so sad to read what gay men went through during the AIDS epidemic. I have a new respect for people who survived this era (my husband included). I will eventually finish reading the book.

Ted Conover is a journalist and associate professor of journalism at New York University. His book Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2000 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Dr. Paul Sanghera (San Jose, CA) Linux+, Network+, CAN, SCP, SCSA, is a technologist, educator, and entrepreneur based in the Silicon Valley, California. With a Ph.D. in Physics, and a Master’s in Computer Science from Cornell University, Dr. Sanghera is an expert in Computer Networking, TCP/IP protocols, Java Technologies, and peer to peer distributed communication systems. Nice book, enough to pass the test probably. Very very basic topics on Solaris, how to install, navigate, manage devices, create directories, perform backups, etc. Very good for beginners. Nothing specific on Solaris architecture x86 or SPARC boot process or PROM, or anything on hardware, which is ok because the book is designed for administrators. For stuff like I think Sun books are the best. However, administrators should also be able to perform necessary steps on configuring new devices, mapping and managing external storage. This book barely covers external storage mapping or hardware installation and configuration.

Good explanation on installation of Solaris 10, configuring network and file systems. Certainly one of the best books for the beginners.

Solaris 9 SCSA guide NOT a Solaris 10 guide

I'd say this book, is one of the worse SCSA study guides I've read.

*So, far I've corrected a good amount of the selftest questions/answers.

*VERY limited information about SMF. There's TONS of information that's 9 related. Statements about starting SSHD via /etc/init.d/sshd SORRY Solaris 10 uses 'svcadm -v enable ssh' NOT an init script. Coverage on settng up rlogin/rsh tools with no password. However, NO mention of SSH doing the same over an encrypted line. Talk about misleading! The covering of inetd implies that you can use the 'standard' /etc/inet/inetd.conf script. NO mention of the inetconv only the inetadm. There's also NO mention of the '-r' flag that starts everything that a service needs. Hence, 'svcadm -v enable -r nfs/server'.

*What's with 'how to setup NIS'? NIS is DEAD that's POOR material for Solaris 10 (maybe 7/8), how about LDAP setup coverage? Even Sun has dropped support of NIS. They don't provide the ldap client SMF mention in the book. They suggest the client is started with the 'ldapclient' command where it's 'ldap.client'. MOST things he implies are standard init scripts where MOST are wrappers for SMF. This SHOULD be mentioned since most newbies will probably miss it.

*SVM coverage doesn't really explain 'how' to create volumes. The tools they mention in a setup (how to do it) use SMC MOST people or seasoned SAs will use the command line tools. There's NO mention to the fact two disk mirror of the root doesn't work right in Solaris 10 (known bug and waiting patch for).

*The coverage of Jumptart & Zones are fast and brief. It's more like a 'summary' then an actual insight of the two.

Don't waste your time on this book. If you're a 'newbie' to Solaris, great. If you're a seasoned SA looking for "Real 10" material, read all the docs.sun.com Solaris 10 information. However, save your money and attempt the Bill Calkins release (still being delivered to me, hopefully better then this waste of money) or as mentioned docs at Sun. This is a total disappointment for anyone 'really' wanting to know the juice of Solaris 10. Coming for a guy who's wrote a lot of stuff for BigAdmin and what not this is a waste. Good baseline skills for the exam but will not make you pass

This book is a good read and has some great information but it will not help you pass the certification test. Knowing everything in the book and the quiz answers will get you to about 45% on the test and the rest is found either through experience or the Sun website.

I did use this book for my studies as did a number of my co-workers. It is helpful but don't count on it ace the test.

With heavy advertising, contests, and the Hadacol caravan-- a traveling road show featuring a dazzling cast of Hollywood stars, beauty queens, and circus antics-- LeBlanc parlayed his elixir into an amazing overnight success. America had never seen anything like it.

But before the 1950s Hadacol phenomenon, LeBlanc had made his mark in the hurly-burly politics of his native Louisiana. As a state legislator, he had championed a steady stream of legislation to increase benefits to the poor and aged. Bold, flashy, and determined, he frequently clashed with the Louisiana Kingfish, Huey Long, in a power struggle that ended only with Long's assassination.

About the Author
Floyd Martin Clay conducted a considerable amount of research to produce his biography of Dudley J. LeBlanc. Mr. Clay initiated the book while LeBlanc was still alive and active, and this enabled him to produce an accurate and incisive biography.
