Sufism is Islam's mystical dimension, and Sufi stories are used to teach "larger" lessons. The protagonists for most stories are famous Sufi luminaries; however, Mulla Nasruddin is the main character in several of the stories. In the stories, the main character typically does "stupid" things to expose our fallacies or show us what is truly important. This collection of stories is divided into nine sections. Each section contains about half a dozen chapters, and each section takes the reader into a higher level of consciousness (which Sufis typically work toward). Each chapter contains a couple of stories, but the bulk of the chapter is devoted to explaining the lesson. The stories, although humorous, serve to embellish the lesson rather [than] form an integral part of it, and each chapter ends with sections for further reflection and practice. Although the stories included are generally intended for children, this book is more suitable for older readers and adults. A chapter can be read quickly, but the reflection and practice last a lifetime.

Wit, Wisdom and Wonder on the Spiritual Path

"What is this love and laughter bubbling up within me? It is the sound of a soul waking up!" (Hafiz) Imam Jamal Rahman brings to life this beautiful Hafiz poem by providing a precious treasure-house of stories which create a sense of love, wonder, and delight over our complex human condition. I read this book cover to cover while sitting by the bedside of my 95-year old father, very ill with pneumonia. I never for a moment thought I would ever laugh aloud at a time like this, but I did! The laughter came through tears of joy and love. Each chapter drew me deeper into contemplation of what it really means to be alive. Why are we here? What is it all about? What is the purpose of life? These are deep and serious questions, but Jamal Rahman helps us keep a healthy and balanced perspective by breaking down our soul's journey into simple, manageable steps. This is not an esoteric path for the chosen elect, but a clear road map for any sincere seeker. Jamal's writing is at once simple, elegant and deep. He doesn't preach or make us feel guilty for our shortcomings. When we laugh, we are laughing at our own human foibles, which helps us to move beyond them to a higher awareness. Each short chapter is replete with timeless wisdom, insights, and humorous stories, and ends with reflections and spiritual practices that anyone can try. I recommend this book to honest seekers of truth, regardless of their chosen religious path, and especially to those who have (or would like to create) a small, caring community with which to share their personal insights, experiences, and practices. Laughter is Healing and Revealing

I fell in love with Nasruddin, the simpleton/wise man, many years ago after hearing stories about him from my meditation teachers. First I laughed at him, then I laughed at myself. He is mythical yes, but also mythic in his ability to show us our own foibles in a way that can lead to true self-awareness, and potentially to transformation.
I like this book because it has heart, is compassionate toward our human condition, and gives clear suggestions without being preachy or pompous. Author Jamal Rahman has extensive knowledge of Sufi, Islamic, Christian, Judaic, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions and draws upon them to aptly provide a landscape for seeking a loving relationship with our own hearts and with others.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for gentle guidance for opening the heart, expanding compassion, and setting foot on the path of service to humanity. At the end of each chapter the author has provided reflections and practices that allowed me the opportunity embrace my own very human condition, my vulnerabilities, and my desire to engage fully in the world.
If it were up to me to suggest improvements to this volume I would add an index. I adore indexes, especially when I am hunting for my favorite Mullah Nasruddin story. You may find your own favorite story here, and have a good laugh.

Belly centered education for the soul.

This book is both heart centered, belly centered and educational for the soul. I had some difficult circumstances come up and I happened to have this book with me and everytime there was something in the book that actually directly helped me in my situation. And, I was dying laughing while in the middle of it. I'm grateful for Jamal's book. Very very grateful.
