A Slim but Enjoyable Reference

This was the first volume I purchased of the series, and it helped convince me I wanted the others. The text is pleasant, factual, and readable, covering the development history and most of the variations. Many of the photos can be found reprinted in all the standard books on the Fw 190. I bought it mainly for the illustrations by Rikyu Watanabe, and they're excellent.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for profile art, but if I am, I don't think I'm alone. Profiles of machinery seem to strike a primal chord in some people, somehow; it can't be genetic, but there's something to them that grabs me. And when it comes to profile art, Rikyu Watanabe -- himself a former WWII flier for Japan -- stands with the best of his time, or even today.
These days, it's fairly easy to produce a nice profile. People do it all the time; there are websites and forums with tutorials. You can download line art and get started with Photoshop. But this book was published in 1980 -- hard to believe that's 30 years ago! -- and back then you had to do it the hard way, on paper.
Watanabe did it, and he excelled. This volume has a little less in the full-color profile department than some. The big one is an Fw 190A-4, printed on a three-page-wide foldout. There are two-page foldouts of an Fw 190A-5, and Fw 190D-9, and the Ta 152-H1. The rest is line drawings, including nice cutaways of both the final A-series, the A-8, and the ultimate Fw fighter, the Ta 152H-1. A cutaway of the BMW 801 radial engine and the cockpit diagram are nice, though a little simple by modern standards.
Of the other line drawings, the best are the four-views (top and bottom, front and back) of the A-8 in 1/46 scale, and the five-views (top and bottom, front and back, and port side profile, in 1/56 scale) of the D-9 and Ta 152H. These are supplemented by a number of line drawn profiles in 1/42 scale.
In summary, while it has good data, that's nothing you can't find elsewhere -- or even free, on the web, now. This book is about the art, and I think it's well worth the relatively low used price.
